Malcom X: Spiritualism and politics before and after the Hajj

Abstract:

Objektem zkoumání diplomové práce je Malcolm X, afroamerický aktivista za rovná lidská práva, řečník a islámský náboženský představitel. Práce se zabývá změnou v jeho ideologii po absolvování pouti do Mekky. První část práce popisuje jeho dětství a ranou dospělost a následně analyzuje externí vlivy a vnitřní motivaci na formování jeho osobnosti. Výsledek těchto vlivů, tj. představitel rasistické sekty Islámský národ s prokázanými vazbami na Ku-Klux Klan a americké nacisty, je dán do kontrastu s osobností, která se zrodila po jeho vyloučení z Islámského národa. Malcolm X, který se přejmenoval po absolvování Hadždže na Malik Shabazz, se stal průkopníkem nové cesty k rovnoprávnosti amerických černochů s bílou většinou. Jeho postup upoutal pozornost čelních afroamerických představitelů, ale kvůli nečekanému atentátu nedošlo ke splnění konečných cílů, které si Shabazz stanovil. Mezi těmito cíli byli například rovná práva pro všechny obyvatele USA, zvýšení vzdělanosti a politické aktivity mezi Afroameričany a celkové zvýšení jejich životní úrovně. Závěrem práce je vyhodnocení jeho domácího i mezinárodního vlivu na celkovou atmosféru 50. a 60. let v USA a doporučení pro další studie. V neposlední řadě se práce zasazuje o celospolečenskou diskuzi o jeho odkazu a o budovaném vztahu mezi Shabazzem a M. L. Kingem.

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is Malcolm X, Afro-American human rights activist, public speaker and Islamic religious representative. The study focuses on the ideological change after his pilgrimage to Mecca. The first part of the thesis describes his childhood and early adulthood and analyzes both external and internal influences on the formation of his personality. The result of these influences, i.e. the representative of racist Nation of Islam with proven ties to the Ku-Klux Klan and American Nazis, is contrasted with a personality that was born after his expulsion from the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X, who renamed himself after Hajj as Malik Shabazz, became a pioneer of a new approach towards racial equality between Black and White citizens in USA. His approach received positive reactions from key Afro-American representatives of the time, however, due to his assassination Shabazz was not able to reach his objectives, such as equal rights for all US citizens, education and political activity among African Blacks and overall improvement of their living conditions. The conclusion of the study includes evaluation of the collected data, namely his influence on domestic and foreign affairs during 50’s and 60’s in USA and recommendation for further study. The work also recommends discussion reaching wider audience about his legacy and the relationship between Shabazz and M. L. King.
