Ecological requirements and diet composition of bryobiont Tipuloidea

Abstract:

Bryophytes provide insects with a safe refuge and stable microclimate, but due to their mechanical barriers and chemical defenses, only a fraction of species use them as a direct food source (bryophagy). These exceptions include crane fly larvae of the superfamily Tipuloidea, whose ecological and dietary requirements in the larval stage remain largely understudied. This bachelor thesis focuses on analyzing the diet composition and ecological requirements of bryobiontic crane fly representatives to determine the extent of their specialization on bryophytes and to investigate the stability of these interactions. The methodology included a microscopic analysis of the gut contents of 53 individuals using the BaDra software to quantify the ingested biomass, complemented by species determination using DNA barcoding. The acquired data revealed significant variability in the feeding strategies among the twelve identified species of the genus Tipula. While the most abundantly represented taxa (T. irrorata, T. winthemi, T. cinereocincta) predominantly exhibited dietary opportunism with a variable ratio of moss to detritus, bryophytes (e.g., in T. alpium) or, conversely, detritus formed the dominant diet component in other species. A surprising finding in this regard was the occurrence of the well-known agricultural pest T. paludosa on moss and its transition to pronounced consumption of moss tissues. A significant faunistic contribution is the first documented record of T. winthemi in the Czech Republic, as well as the identification of a presumably new, bryophagous taxon Tipula sp 1.

Abstract:

Machorasty poskytujú hmyzu bezpečné útočisko a stabilné mikroklíma, no pre ich mechanické bariéry a chemickú ochranu ich ako priamy zdroj potravy (bryofágia) využíva len zlomok druhov. Medzi tieto výnimky patria aj larvy tiplíc z nadčeľade Tipuloidea, ktorých ekologické a potravné nároky v larválnom štádiu sú doposiaľ len málo preskúmané. Táto bakalárska práca sa zameriava na analýzu zloženia potravy a ekologických nárokov bryobiontných zástupcov tiplíc s cieľom zistiť mieru ich špecializácie na machorasty a preskúmať stálosť týchto väzieb. Metodika zahŕňala mikroskopickú analýzu obsahu tráviaceho traktu 53 jedincov s využitím softvéru BaDra na kvantifikáciu prijatej biomasy, doplnenú o druhovú determináciu pomocou DNA barcodingu. Získané dáta odhalili výraznú variabilitu v potravných stratégiách u dvanástich zistených druhov rodu Tipula. Kým u najpočetnejšie zastúpených taxónov (T. irrorata, T. winthemi, T. cinereocincta) prevládal potravný oportunizmus s premenlivým pomerom machu a detritu, u iných druhov tvorili dominantnú zložku potravy machorasty (napr. T. alpium), alebo naopak detrit. Prekvapivým zistením bol v tomto smere nález známeho poľnohospodárskeho škodcu T. paludosa na machu a jeho prechod na výraznú konzumáciu machových pletív. Významným faunistickým prínosom je zrejme prvý doložený nález druhu T. winthemi v ČR, ako aj identifikácia pravdepodobne nového, bryofágneho taxónu, pracovne označeného ako Tipula sp. 1.
