The Blind Watchmaker Phenomenon: Richard Dawkins and His Critique of Religion

Abstract:

Richard Dawkins je známým britským popularizátorem genocentrického pojetí evoluční biologie, který proslul zvláště s publikací svého knižního bestselleru Boží blud, kde se pokouší dokázat, že ?Bůh téměř jistě neexistuje?. Cílem této práce je především zmapovat Dawkinsův pohled na náboženství a filosofická východiska stojící za jeho konstrukcí. Tématem první kapitoly je širší kontext Dawkinsova biologického myšlení, na jehož pozadí je pak ve druhé kapitole analyzována jeho kritika náboženství. Třetí kapitola je pak věnována společenským souvislostem této kritiky a čtvrtá její analýze z hlediska poznatků a metodologie religionistiky. Poslední kapitola se zabývá Dawkinsovým pojetím vědy spočívajícím v ontologickém naturalismu a hodnotí jeho vědeckost v souvislosti s fenoménem nástupu naturalizujícího a materialistického přístupu ke studiu náboženství v sociálních vědách.

Abstract:

Richard Dawkins is a well known British popularizer of the genocentric approach to the evolutionary biology who has become famous especially for his publication of The God Delusion bestseller. He is trying to give there the evidence that ?God almost certainly does not exist?. The aim of this project is mainly to map Dawkins? view of religion and the philosophical foundations lying behind its construction. The theme of the first chapter is a wider context of Dawkins? biological thought within its frame his critique of religion is being analysed in the following chapter. Then the third chapter is devoted to the societal connections of this critique and the fourth to its analysis from the perspective of the religious studies? findings and methodology. The last chapter handles Dawkinsian concept of science lying in the ontological naturalism and evaluates its scholarship in connection with the coming of the naturalizing and materialistic approaches to the study of religions in the social sciences.
