A Border between Abstraction and Figuration: Aesthetic Problems

Abstract:

Diplomová práci si klade za cíl poukázat na problematičnost duálního pojmového rozlišení na abstrakci a figuraci, zároveň na pozadí estetických teorií nabídnout funkčnější rozlišení těchto kategorií a vysvětlit jejich strukturální vztah. První část práce předkládá základní pojmové rozlišení na úrovni reference i stylu. Druhá část potom představuje tři vybrané estetické problémy související se vztahem abstrakce a figurace: problém reference, problém interpretace a kontextuality a problém struktury a vrstevnatosti malířského díla v souvislosti s distinkcí abstrakce a figurace. Práce se také pokouší zodpovědět, zda je rozdíl mezi filozofickým a obecně uměnovědně užívaným pojetím pojmu „abstrakce“ (rozdíl „abstrahování“ a „bezpředmětné abstrakce“) kvantitativní či kvalitativní povahy – a pokud kvalitativní, pak nalézt způsob, jak by se tato dvě pojetí mohla setkávat.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis aims to point out the problems of the dual conceptual distinction on abstraction and figuration, and, on the background of aesthetic theories, to offer a more functional differentiation of these categories and to explain their structural relationship. The first part presents the basic conceptual distinction at the level of reference and style. The second part then presents three selected aesthetic problems related to the unclear boundaries of abstraction and figuration: the problem of reference, the problem of interpretation and contextuality, and the problem of the structure of the painting related to the distinction of abstraction and figuration. The thesis also attempts to answer whether the difference between the philosophical and the general artistic use of the concept of "abstraction" (the difference between "abstracting" and "non-objective abstraction") is of a quantitative or qualitative nature - and if qualitative, then to find a way of their connection.
