Nowcasting building permits with Google Trends in selected European countries

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na nowcasting stavebních povolení s Google Trends ve vybraných evropských zemích. Počet vydaných stavebních povolení je leading indikátorem sektoru stavebnictví. Nicméně data o stavebních povoleních jsou zveřejňována se zpožděním asi dvou měsíců. Z toho důvodu je žádoucí provést nowcasting stavebních povolení. Tato práce analyzuje modely časových řad České republiky a Německa. Jsou porovnány přesnosti predikcí vektorových autoregresních modelů (VAR) zahrnující Google Trends data oproti základním jednorozměrným AR modelům. Je ukázáno, že VAR model pro Českou republiku nedokázal zlepšit predikce oproti základnímu AR modelu. VAR model pro Německo však překonal základní model na základě RMSE o 2,3 % a MAE o 3,5 %. Výsledky jsou smíšené, ale pozitivní výstup Německého modelu vybízí k dalšímu výzkumu. Google Trends data jsou bezplatně dostupná a je možné na ně aplikovat celou řadu modelů, a to v nejrůznějších zemích světa.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is concerned with nowcasting building permits with Google Trends in selected European countries. The number of issued building permits is leading indicator of construction sector. However, data on building permits are released with a lag close to two months. Therefore, accurate nowcasts of this leading indicator are desirable. This thesis analyses time series models of the Czech Republic and Germany. The forecast accuracy of vector autoregressive models (VAR) including Google Trends data is compared to benchmark univariate AR models. It was shown that VAR model for the Czech Republic could not improve predictions compared to benchmark AR model. VAR model for Germany though, outperformed the benchmark model on the basis of RMSE by 2,3 % and MAE by 3,5 %. Results are mixed, but positive output of Germany's model encourages to further research. Google Trends data are available for free and it is possible to apply many different models in many different world countries to them.
