The choice of a mechanical wheelchair from the perspective of an occupational therapist

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá ergoterapeutickým postupem při výběru mechanického vozíku pro klienty s rozdílným typem poškození pohybového aparátu. Ve své bakalářské práci se zaměřuji na seznámení laické veřejnosti s ergoterapeutickými postupy v průběhu výběru mechanického vozíku s ohledem na fyzický stav klienta, prostředí ve kterém se pohybuje, využití a funkčnost mechanického vozíku pro dosažení potřeb klienta. Upozorňuji na porovnání rozdílů správného a špatného nastavení vozíku a zmiňuji se o instruktáži používání a manipulaci s vozíkem. Zmiňuji se o způsobu financování a jeho možných úskalích. Hlavní část práce obsahuje 2 typy klientů s odlišnými diagnózami. Na základě rozhovorů, anamnézy a vstupního ergoterapeutického hodnocení bylo provedeno zaměření parametrů pro vhodný vozík, vybrány volitelné doplňky k vozíku, domluveno financování vozíku a klient byl zaučen pro správné použití a nastavení vozíku. Po několika setkáních, výběru a zaměření získali klienti vozík a po zaučení jeho používání se tak zvýšila soběstačnost a kvalita života a to nejen klientů, ale i jejich rodinných příslušníků. Ergoterapeutická intervence v průběhu návštěv měla značný vliv na volbu vhodného vozíku jako kompenzační pomůcky a následně zlepšení soběstačnosti a začlenění klientů do společenského a aktivního života.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the occupational therapy procedur efor the selection of a mechanical wheelchair for clients with diffirent types of musculoskeletal impairments. In my bachelor's thesis I aim to introduce the general public to the occupational therapy procedures during the selection of a mechanical wheelchair with regard to the physical condition of the client, the environment in which they move, the use and functionality of the mechanical wheelchair to achieve the client's needs. I point out the differences between correct and incorrect wheelchair setups and mention the instruction of wheelchair use and handling. I mention the financing method and its potential pitfalls. The main part of the paper includes 2 types of clients with different diagnoses. Based on interviews, medical history and initial occupational therapy assessment, parameters for a suitable wheelchair were targeted, optional wheelchair accessories were selected, financing for the wheelchair was arranged and the client was instructed for correct use and set up of the wheelchair. After several meetings, selection and orientation, the clients received a wheelchair and after learning how to use it, their self-sufficiency and quality of life increased not only for the clients but also for their family members. The occupational therapy intervention during the visits had a significant impact on the choice of a suitable wheelchair as a compensatory aid and subsequently improved the clients' self-sufficiency and integration into social and active life.
