The utility of gesticulation – the case of learning the temporal orientation in Chinese as a second/third language

Abstract:

Každý se pravděpodobně během svého života setkal s potížemi, které se týkaly "správného zapamatování si", a to zejména při poznávání jiné země, národnosti, kultury, etnické menšiny apod., přičemž nejvýznačnějším bodem je pravděpodobně jazyková bariéra, která jde ruku v ruce s odlišným způsobem myšlení a vnímání světa. Proto je neschopnost zapamatovat si nebo zapamatovat si správně posílena kulturně specifickými nebo kulturními rozdíly v cílové kultuře. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá užitečností využití gest rukou pro lepší pochopení kulturně specifické časové orientace při studiu čínštiny jako cizího jazyka. Prostřednictvím malého experimentu provedeného na skupině nových studentů čínštiny je zkoumáno, zda gesta rukou zlepšují schopnost studentů osvojit si pojem časové orientace na svislé ose v čínštině a pomáhají jim tento pojem udržet v dlouhodobé paměti.

Abstract:

Everyone has probably encountered difficulties concerning “memorizing it right” during one´s lifetime, especially while being engaged in the process of learning about a different country, nationality, culture, ethnic minority, etc. the most distinguishing point is the most likely to be the language barrier going hand in hand with a different way of thinking and perceiving the world. Hence the inability to memorize or memorize right is strengthened by cultural-specific or cultural differences in the targeted culture. This bachelor´s thesis investigates the utility of using hand gestures to better understand the cultural-specific temporal orientation for studying the Chinese language as a foreign language. Through a small experiment run on a group of new learners of Chinese, it is explored whether hand gestures improve students´ ability to acquire the concept of temporal orientation on a vertical axis in Chinese and help them to keep the concept in long-term memory.
