Integration of Immigrants in Great Britain: Analysis of the Development and Contemporary Changes of the Integration Policies

Anotácia:

Tématem bakalářské práce je integrační politika přistěhovalců ve Velké Británii. Je zaměřena na integraci etnicky odlišných přistěhovalců od konce druhé světové války s důrazem na současný vývoj v této oblasti. V první části práce je nastaven teoretický rámec pro případovou studii. Druhá část se zaměřuje na vývoj britské poválečné integrační politiky do devadesátých let s důrazem na britskou podobu multikulturalismu. Tématem třetí části práce jsou změny integračního rámce, ke kterým dochází od přelomu tisíciletí. Práce dokazuje, že původní multikulturní rámec nebyl dostačující a vedl k fragmentaci a segregaci přistěhovaleckých komunit. Nedokázal se navíc vypořádat s novou výzvou, kterou je identifikace přistěhovalců druhé a třetí generace na základě náboženství místo etnika. Proto je akcent na integraci etnických skupin v současnosti vystřídán důrazem na občanskou integraci jednotlivců za podpory kulturní a skupinové různosti

Abstract:

This paper explores integration policies in Great Britain. It is focused on the post-war integration of ethnic minority communities and contemporary developments in this area. The first part sets up the theoretical framework for the case study. The second part describes the development of British postwar integration policy until the 1990's, emphasing the aspects of the British multiculturalism. The third part analyses the contemporary changes of the integration framework. It is argued that the old multicultural policies led to a fragmentation and a segregation of ethnic minority groups. Furthemore, the framework was not capable of dealing with the new challenge posed by the second and third generation immigrants, who identify themselves in terms of religion rather than in terms of ethnicity. Thus, the integration of ethnic groups is replaced by the integration of citizens with the tolerance of the group differences
