Mechanisms in Meaning Variation: A Case Study of Human Locomotion Verbs

Abstract:

Odchylně od prototypických významů polysémního slova zanechávají odvozené významy sémantiky „všemožné neřešitelné problémy“ (Fillmore & Atkins, 2000, p. 100). Tento článek se ptá: Jaké jsou mechanismy pro významové variace anglických sloves typů lidské lokomoce, jmenovitě chodit, běžet, plazit se, lézt, skákat, létat a plavat? K zodpovězení této otázky tento článek kombinuje Fillmoreův síťový model polysémie a komponentní analýzu. Pro prvně jmenovaný tento dokument předpokládá doslovný smysl slovesa jako základní smysl, ze kterého jsou odvozeny rozšířené smysly; u druhého z nich tento článek rozkládá základní smysl na [Pohyb, způsob, cesta] a poté představuje jemnozrnný způsob ve smyslu fyzického kontaktu s povrchem a jemnozrnnou cestu z hlediska směrovosti. Výsledky ukazují, že rozšířené smysly pocházejí ze základních kinetických vzorců, které mohou být reprezentovány rozklady uvedenými výše. Výsledky také ukazují, že pragmatické a kognitivní procesy zahrnující konceptuální metafory, obrazová schémata, metonymii nebo fiktivní pohyb jsou základem posunu od základních smyslů k rozšířeným smyslům. Abstrahováno od základních kinetických vzorců, každé ukázkové sloveso má na kognitivní úrovni rozlišovací znaky, které určují jeho kontextovou použitelnost. Tento článek zdůrazňuje pragmatické a kognitivní procesy inherentních rysů vzorových sloves pocházejících z pohybu, jemnozrnného způsobu a cesty, které jsou základem rozšířených smyslů.

Abstract:

Departing from the prototypical meanings of a polysemous word, derived meanings leave semanticists “all sorts of unsolvable problems” (Fillmore & Atkins, 2000, p. 100). This paper asks: What are the mechanisms for meaning variation of English verbs of human locomotion types, namely walk, run, crawl, climb, jump, fly and swim? To answer this question, this paper combines Fillmore’s network model of polysemy and componential analysis. For the former, this paper posits the literal sense of the verb as the core sense from which extended senses are derived; for the latter, this paper decomposes the core sense into [Motion, Manner, Path], and then represents the fine-grained manner in terms of physical contact with the surface and the fine-grained path in terms of directionality. Results ascertain that extended senses are sourced from basic kinetic patterns which can be represented by decompositions mentioned above. Results also reveal that pragmatic and cognitive processes involving conceptual metaphors, image schemas, metonymy, or fictive motion underlie the shift from the core senses to the extended senses. Abstracted from basic kinetic patterns, each sample verb has distinguishing features at the cognitive level that determine its context applicability. This paper emphasizes the pragmatic and cognitive processes of inherent features of the sample verbs sourced from motion, fine-grained manner and path, which underlie the extended senses.
