The influence of impulsivity and emotion regulation on the process of relapse in methamphetamine users

Abstract:

Výzkumy dlouhodobě naznačují silný vztah mezi užíváním psychoaktivních látek a některými osobnostními rysy. Mezi tyto rysy patří především impulzivita a emoční regulace. Zdá se, že jednotlivé dimenze těchto rysů ovlivňují látkovou závislost v různých fázích vývoje tohoto onemocnění. Cílem této práce bylo pokusit se prozkoumat, které dimenze impulzivity a emoční regulace mají vliv na relaps u uživatelů metamfetaminu. Data pro bakalářskou práci jsem sbíral v terapeutických komunitách (n=24) a prostřednictvím klubu Absolvent (n=85). Impulzivitu jsem měřil pomocí škály UPPS-P a emoční regulaci pomocí dotazníku DERS. Data těchto dvou skupin jsem srovnával pomocí analýzy rozptylů se skupinou pacientů diagnostikovaných s hraniční poruchou osobnosti (n=39) a se skupinou lidí bez psychiatrické diagnózy (n=39). Výsledky analýzy rozptylů odhalily statisticky významný rozdíl mezi průměry skupiny klientů terapeutických komunit a skupiny bez psychiatrické diagnózy v dimenzi pozitivní urgence (MD=20,08, p = <.001, d=3,1) a statisticky významný rozdíl mezi průměry skupiny abstinujících uživatelů a skupiny lidí bez psychiatrické diagnózy (MD=10,15, p = <.001, d=1,77) v dimenzi negativní urgence.

Abstract:

Studies consistently suggest a strong relationship between psychoactive substance use and certain personality traits. These traits include, in particular, impulsivity and emotional regulation. Different dimensions of these traits seem to influence substance dependence at different stages of the development of the disorder. The aim of the present study was to try to explore which dimensions of impulsivity and emotion regulation influence relapse in methamphetamine users. I collected data for this thesis in therapeutic communities (n=24) and through klub Absolvent (n=85). I measured impulsivity using the UPPS-P scale and emotion regulation using the DERS questionnaire. I compared data from these two groups using analysis of variance with a group of patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (n=39) and a group of people without a psychiatric diagnosis (n=39). The results of the analysis of variance revealed a statistically significant difference between the means of the therapeutic community client group and the group without a psychiatric diagnosis in the positive urgency dimension (MD=20.08, p=<.001, d=3.1) and a statistically significant difference between the means of the abstinent user group and the group without a psychiatric diagnosis (MD=10.15, p=<.001, d=1.77) in the negative urgency dimension.
