Strainers: Observations on a Distinct Type of Neolithic and Chalcolithic pottery in the Khabur Valley (Northeastern Syria)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na distribuci cedníků v povodí řeky Chábur v období Neolitu a Chalkolitu. Cílem této práce je podívat se na důvod(y) jejich řídkého výskytu na keramických souborech z předem určeného vzorku lokalit v danné oblasti a odpovědět na otázky: A."Jaké hodnoty zaujímají vzhledem k příslušným keramickým souborům?” a za B. "Proč se nevyskytují ve větším množství?" Tohoto cíle by mělo být dosaženo pomocí vypracování grafů, které vyjadřují procentuální hodnoty nalezených cedníků v časově příslušných keramických souborech. Do práce je zahrnuto i několik fragmentů cedníků získaných v rámci projektu Yale Khabur Basin Survey, které autorka bakalářské práce sama zpracovávala v průběhu stáže uskutečněné na univerzitě v Yale v roce 2014. Tato práce si klade za cíl osvětlit význam tohoto zvláštního typu keramiky, kterému dosud nebyla věnována patřičná pozornost.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the distribution of strainers in the Khabur Valley in Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. The aim of this work is to look into the reason of their sparse occurrence in the pottery assemblages of sample sites in named area to answer the questions A. "What numbers do they occupy within the relative pottery assemblages?” and B. "Why do they not occur in larger quantities?" This should be achieved by drawing up the graphs showing the percentages of strainers within the pottery assemblages relevant to the periods in which the strainers were found. This examination includes also a few fragments of strainers, recovered during the Yale Khabur Basin Survey Project, with which I had the opportunity to work at Yale University in 2014. This paper, aims to shed light on this important pottery type which has not been yet given adequate attention.
