Comparative analysis of price-level targeting and inflation targeting

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce v teoretické části porovnává cílování inflace s cílováním cenové hladiny. Hlavní výhoda cílování cenové hladiny je shledána při situaci pasti likvidity, kdy implikuje lepší vypořádání se s touto situací. V empirické části jsou analyzovány časové řady cenové hladiny čtyř vybraných zemí, které cílují inflaci. Pokud by centrální banky dodržovaly svůj inflační cíl a šoky by neměly permanentní efekt, cenová hladina by vykazovala charakter trendové stacionarity. V případě cílování cenové hladiny by cenová hladina oscilovala kolem cíle a byla trendově stacionární. Pokud by tedy časová řada při cílování inflace byla trendově stacionární, tak by centrální banka implicitně cílovala i cenovou hladinu. Tato práce se tedy zabývá testováním přítomnosti jednotkového kořene v časové řadě cenové hladiny a v odchylkách od ní. Na základě testů lze konstatovat, že cenová hladina ani odchylky nejsou trendově stacionární, respektive stacionární. Je ale znatelný určitý vliv finanční krize na (trendovou) stacionaritu, a to zejména v Kanadě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis in the theoretical part compares inflation targeting and price level targeting. The main advantage of price level targeting is found in liquidity trap, when it implies better settlement with this situation. In the practical part the price level of four inflation-targeting countries is analysed. If central banks fulfilled their inflation target and inflation shocks did not have permanent effect, the price level would be trend stationary. In the price level targeting, the price level should oscillate around the target and imply trend stationarity. If the price level in inflation-targeting regime implied trend stationarity, then the central bank would implicitly target the price level, too. This thesis is testing the presence of unit root in the price level and also in deviations from the target. It is found that neither the price level nor the deviations from the target are (trend) stationary. It is also found that there is a noticeable impact of the financial crisis on the (trend) stationarity, particularly in Canada.
