Environmental education in mathematics at the second stage of primary school

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Enviromentální výchova v matematice na druhém stupni ZŠ“ mapuje současnou situaci ohledně výuky matematiky v propojení s enviromentální výchovou na druhém stupni základních škol. V rámci této práce vznikla také sbírka matematických úloh určených pro 6. a 7. ročník s tématy z oblasti udržitelnosti, recyklace, ekologie apod. Tyto úlohy pracují se skutečnými údaji ze světa kolem nás, což znamená, že i výsledky úloh odpovídají skutečnosti. Úlohy byly koncipovány jako aktivizační a transferové nástroje uvádějící matematiku i do jiných výukových předmětů. Výsledná sbírka byla ověřena pilotním začleněním do výuky na základní škole. Následně byla vyhodnocena zpětná vazba.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis "Environmental education in mathematics at the second level of elementary school" maps the current situation regarding the teaching of mathematics in connection with environmental education at lower secondary level. Mapping of the grade 6 and 7 mathematics textbooks showed that the exercises connecting those two fields either occur in low numbers or do not occur at all. As a part of this thesis, a collection of mathematical exercises with the topics such as sustainability, recycling, ecology, etc., was created. These exercises were designed to be activation and transfer tools introducing mathematics into other teaching subjects. As they include data from the real world, their results match reality. The resulting collection was verified by pilot inclusion in elementary school teaching, and subsequently, the feedback was evaluated. The findings pointed out the suitability of connecting mathematics with the environmental topics. The students did not only strengthen their mathematical abilities, but they have also learned something new. Furthermore, since the teacher-respondents did not include these topics in their lessons in the past, they welcomed the creation of this collection of mathematical exercises and would like to use it in the future.
