Comics in the Czech Republic: analysis of the Czech comics market between 2013 and 2018

Abstract:

Tato teoreticko-empirická diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem komiksu ve světovém, ale primárně v českém kontextu. Teoretická část se v úvodu zaobírá samotným komiksem a jeho charakteristickými prvky. Následuje shrnutí historie komiksu ve třech nejdůležitějších světových oblastech, jimiž jsou USA, Francie a Belgie a Japonsko. Poté je zkoumán komiks v České republice z hlediska historie, důležitých postav, ale i vztah českých knihoven k tomuto médiu. Posléze se práce přesouvá do své praktické části, ve které je zjišťována struktura českého trhu s (primárně) knižními komiksy v období mezi lety 2013 až 2018. Po představení metodologie je vybrána žánrová kategorizace, která je poté aplikována na výzkumný vzorek. Výzkum se zaměřuje na žánrové složení produkce ze čtyřech hlavních oblastí představených v teoretické části a na další všeobecné atributy trhu (cena atd.).

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of comics in both global and Czech contexts. It is divided into two parts: theoretical and empirical. The first part briefly characterizes comics and its main components. After that, the brief historical overview of American, Franco-Belgian and Japanese comics is presented. History and important figures of comics in the Czech Republic are then summarized. The relationship between Czech libraries and comics is also examined. The empirical part consists of the research of Czech comics market between the years 2013 and 2018. After the research methods are introduced, the genre classification is selected and applied on the research sample. The research is primarily focused on genre distribution within each main geographical area described in the theoretical part. Other general attributes of the comics market are also examined (e.g. price).
