Differences in perception of human faces between children with autism spectrum disorder and normally developing using Eye-tracking technology

Abstract:

The Theoretical part of the Master´s Diploma Thesis describes sensory-perceptual issues and psychological theories of autism. This Eye-Tracking study has a quasi-experimental design and has been inspired by previous research studies. The research sample consists of 13 normally developing children and 8 children with autism spectrum disorder. We analyzed a number of fixations, fixation duration and relative values at predefined areas of interest on the pictures of human faces. Another task was to find out the differences between groups in familiar face processing and new face processing. Normally developing children spent significantly more time at eye and mouth communication areas than children with autism. Autistic children prefer to explore the whole face. Both groups were significantly more interested in observation of the new face. Relative values analysis showed that children with autism spent one third less time observing a new face. Results show that there is not that much difference in where autistic children focus their attention, but they instead differ in what kind of things they give relevance to.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca zhrňuje v teoretickej časti senzoricko-percepčné špecifíká a psychologické teórie autizmu. Výskumný eye-trackingový dizajn má kvazi-experimentálny charakter a je inšpirovaný predchádzajúcimi štúdiami. Skúmaný súbor tvorilo 13 zdravých detí a 8 detí s poruchou autistického spektra. Na základe vymedzených oblastí záujmu na tvárach boli analyzované počty fixácií, čas strávený v týchto oblastiach a pomerové hodnoty medzi skupinou s autizmom a zdravými deťmi. Ďalšou úlohou bolo zistiť medziskupinové rozdiely pri spracovávaní známej a neznámej tváre. Intaktné deti trávili signifikantne viac času na komunikačných kanáloch oblastí očí a úst oproti deťom s autizmom. Deti s autizmom viac explorujú celú tvár. Obe skupiny signifikatne viac zaujala neznáma tvár než známa. Pomerová analýza ukazuje, že deti s autizmom trávia však až o tretinu menej času observáciou neznámej tváre. Výsledky poukazujú na to, že nie je taký rozdiel v tom, že by mali deti s autizmom zameranú pozornosť na iné veci, ale v tom, že prikladajú význam iným veciam ako deti zdravé.
