The influence of personality variables on lie and truth detection

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá zkoumáním souvislostí mezi osobnostními rysy a schopností rozpoznávat lež a pravdu. Teoretická část pojednává o problematice lhaní a možnostech detekce lži. Uvádí základní definici a popis osobnostních proměnných, které by dle dosavadních studií měly mít na detekci vliv. Jedná se o pohlaví, vlastnosti Velké pětky, sebemonitorování, emoční inteligenci a poruchy osobnosti. Na základě těchto poznatků byl realizován korelační výzkum, který tyto souvislosti ověřuje a tvoří tak praktickou část práce. K měření osobnostních charakteristik sloužily metody Mini IPIP, RSMS, TEIQue-SF a PSSI. Celkově byla získána data od 479 respondentů, jimž byl následně zaslán odkaz ke druhé části výzkumu. Ta spočívala v měření schopnosti detekce lži a pravdy na podkladu k tomu účelu vytvořených videí s figuranty. Jejich úkolem bylo podávat lživé a pravdivé výpovědi, jež participanti studie rozlišovali. Celkově test obsahoval 52 klipů, z nichž 36 bylo určeno kdetekci. Výzkumný soubor druhé fáze výzkumu tvořilo 239 respondentů. Úspěšnost respondentů v detekci lži byla 54 % a v detekci pravdy 52 %. Na základě porovnání výsledků z obou částí se ve většině případů závislost mezi osobnostními rysy a přesností detekce lži a pravdy neprokázala. Výsledky poukázaly pouze na slabé vztahy na některých škálách, a to na IPIP škále svědomitosti a extraverze. U metody PSSI na škále disociální poruchy osobnosti a u poruchy osobnosti vyznačující se sebeobětováním. U sebemonitoringu a emoční inteligence se signifikantní korelace s přesností detekce nepotvrdila. Výsledky výzkumu dále odhalily nezávislost mezi detekcí lži a detekcí pravdy.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with connections between individual differences and the ability to detect truth and lie. The theoretical part of this paper goes about problematics of lying and possibilities of deception detection. It presents basic definitions and descriptions of individual variables, which, according to already performed studies, should have an influence on lie detection. These are gender, personality dimensions of Big Five, self-monitoring, emotional intelligence and personality disorders. Based on these knowledges the corelation research was carried out and its goal was to verify these connections. It makes up the practical part of this paper. To measure personal characteristics, methods Mini IPIP, RSMS, TEIQue-SF and PSSI were used. Overall, there were collected data from 479 respondents, to whom the link for a second part of this research was sent. The purpose of this part was to measure respondent's ability to detect truths and lies using newly created videos with figurants. Their task was to tell truth or lie statements, which participants of this study distinguished. The test was conducted from 52 clips, from which 36 clips were meant for detection. Only 239 participants sent their answers back. The accuracy of lie detection was 54 % and truth detection was 52 %. After comparing results from both parts of this study, there were only a few weak correlations found between individual differences and lie and truth detection accuracy. The results showed significant correlation between the IPIP dimension conscientiousness and extraversion. Using the PSSI inventory, there were found correlations between detection ability and personality disorder characterized by self-sacrifice and dissocial personality disorder. There were not confirmed any correlations between accuracy of detection and self-monitoring, nor between emotional intelligence. The results of this study also showed independence between lie and truth detection.
