Teaching and Using IPA in Lower Secondary English Classes

Abstract:

Cílem této závěrečné práce je potvrdit přínosy výuky a využití Mezinárodní fonetické abecedy (IPA) v hodinách anglického jazyka na 2. stupni ZŠ, zejména pokud jde o výslovnost žáků. Nejprve jsou uvedena teoretická východiska popisující anglický přepis výslovnosti a Mezinárodní fonetickou abecedu a její vývoj. Dále je zahrnuta teorie výuky výslovnosti a popis různých aktivit, stejně jako analýza učebnic anglického jazyka, podle kterých na zkoumané škole vyučují, se zaměřením na výuku výslovnosti. V praktické části této práce je vysvětlen jak předběžný výzkum, tak hlavní výzkum, shromažďování dat a jejich analýza. Výzkum byl uskutečněn na ZŠ Jabloňová v Liberci. Nakonec zjištění jsou projednána a závěry vyvozeny. Bylo prokázáno, že znalost a použití IPA v hodinách anglického jazyka na 2. stupni ZŠ je pro žáky a jejich výslovnost výhodné a užitečné.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to confirm benefits of teaching and using IPA in lower secondary English classes, mainly in relation to pronunciation skills of learners of English language. First, theoretical background is presented describing English transcription and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and its development. Next, the theory of pronunciation teaching where various activities are introduced is included as well as an analysis of English books used at the researched school with the focus on teaching pronunciation. Second, pre-research and the main research are explained, performed, data are collected and analysed in the practical part of the thesis. The research was conducted at ZŠ Jabloňová in Liberec. Finally, the findings are discussed and conclusions are drawn. It was proved that the knowledge and use of IPA in English classes at lower secondary school is advantageous for learners and helpful for their pronunciation skills.
