Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá rolí Timothy Learyho, bývalého harvardského psychologa, který se stal jednou z hlavních postav kontrakulturního hnutí šedesátých let v USA. Poté, co se seznámil s psychedeliky, jal se je prosazovat mezi co nejvíce lidí a usiloval o to, aby byly oficiálně uznány jako způsob k rozšiřování vědomí. Americká vláda však vystoupila proti tomuto požadavku, uvěznila jej a prohlásila psychedelické drogy za nelegální. Hodnocení jeho role v rámci psychedelického hnutí je nesnadné, ale hlavní argument této práce je ten, že Leary svým působením přinesl psychedelickému hnutí více škody než užitku.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the role of Timothy Leary, former Harvard psychologist, who became one of the main figures of the 1960s US counterculture movement. As he became acquainted with the psychedelic drugs, he tried to make them widespread and officially acknowledged as a way of expanding consciousness. However, the US government countered his effort by putting him in prison and making psychedelic drugs illegal. The evaluation of his role within the movement is thus uneasy, but the main argument of this thesis claims that Leary caused more harm than good to the psychedelic movement.
