Carrot and Stick Democracy, how did Turkish Foreign Relations with European Union Influenced and Shaped Turkish Democracy Between 2002 to 2022

Abstract:

As Turkey’s decades old democratization efforts and its relations with the European Union has resulted in a new authoritarian upheaval, one might get lost in understanding how things ended up as they did. As Turkish democracy and relations with the European Union goes back several decades, and in a rather bumpy fashion, reasoning recent events require comprehensive knowledge both on the history of the topic and also the literature and theories surrounding it. This thesis will aim to analyze Turkish democracy, relations with the European Union, how both are interconnected and how both influenced each other over the years. To analyze these terms and topics, the article will take a look at the historical development of Turkish democracy and relations with the European Union, mainly focusing on the period between 2002 and 2022. After diving into the events that took place, an analysis of how various theories collected from numerous literatures will put into effect to reason the trends and correlations on how the European Union helped to shape Turkish democracy.
