Ocular-Motor Methods for Detecting Deception: Effect of Countermeasures

Abstract:

Primárním cílem diplomové práce byla pilotáž Okulomotorického testu detekce lži (ODT) v České republice a zjištění efektu tzv „countermeasures“ (strategií, jak test porazit). Po experimentu s domnělým zločinem ODT účastníky vyhodnotí jako vinné či nevinné na základě reakcí zornic a očních pohybů při odpovídání na položky (Správně/ Nesprávně) týkající se jejich možné kriminální aktivity. Současná studie se zabývala pouze jedním z prediktorů lži, které ODT využívá: změnami v průměru zornic. Čtyřicet participantů bylo náhodně připsáno do vinné/nevinné podmínky a také do informované/neinformované podmínky. Participanti v informované podmínce měli možnost si před testováním nastudovat dokument obsahující informace o Okulomotorickém testu a možných countermeasures. Bylo zjištěno, že (a) vinným účastníkům se při odpovídání na otázky o relevantním zločinu rozšiřují zornice více než nevinným, (b) pročtení informačního dokumentu nemělo efekt na změny v rozšiřování zornic při odpovídání na testové otázky a (c) bylo identifikováno sedm vinných účastníků, kteří vykazovali větší dilataci zornic při odpovídání na otázky týkající se zločinu, který nespáchali než při relevantních otázkách. Většina z nich využila záměrného ovlivňování rychlosti odpovědí a záměrného matení testu. Další výzkum bude nezbytný pro zjištění, zda existují účinné strategie, které mohou ohrozit přesnost testu.

Abstract:

The present mock crime study used an ocular- motor deception test (ODT) that classifies participants as truthful or deceptive based on pupillary responses and eye movements while people read statements concerning their possible involvement in illicit activities and respond true/false. The present study was the first preliminary pilot study using the ODT in the Czech Republic and assessed only pupillary changes as a response to the three item types (neutral, cash, exam). Forty participants were randomly assigned to a guilty/innocent condition as well as to an informed/uninformed condition; prior to the testing, participants in the informed condition had a chance to study a document with suggestions of possible countermeasures to defeat the ODT. It was found that (a) guilty participants show a greater pupillary response to cash items than innocent participants, (b) the information did not moderate the effect of deception on pupillary responses and, (c) seven guilty participants were identified that managed to appear innocent due to stronger pupillary responses to exam items than to cash items. Most of these participants had in common two categories of countermeasures: controlling the speed of answers and deliberate confusing of the test. Further research is necessary to explore whether there are efficient countermeasures that might threaten the ODT classification accuracy.
