Iago and His Influence: Language Patterns and Imagery in Czech Translations of "Othello"

Abstract:

Diplomová práce s názvem Jago a jeho vliv: Vzorce jazyka a užívání metafor v českých překladech "Othella" si dává za cíl zjistit, jak různí překladatelé nakládají s jedním ze zásadních aspektů hry. Tímto aspektem je vliv Jaga na ostatní postavy pomocí jazykových prostředků. První část práce je vymezena obecné rozpravě a teorii překladu na více úrovních směrem od obecného ke konkrétnímu – od obecné problematiky dramatického překladu, přes specifika překladu Shakespearova díla až k charakteristice českých překladů a překladatelů samotné hry Othello. V prostřední části práce je popsáno pět tematických skupin, které jsou dále v práci sledovány. Jedná se o jazyk náboženský, démonický, kontrast tmy a světla, nákaza a nemoci a zvířecí metafory. V poslední, praktické části jsou okomentovány a vyhodnoceny výsledky srovnání jedenácti českých překladů z pera různých překladatelů, od těch nejstarších až po současné.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis called Iago and His Influence: Language Patterns and Imagery in Czech Translations of "Othello" is to ascertain how particular translators deal with one of fundamental aspects of the play. This aspect is the influence of Iago on the other characters through his speech. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to general discussion on drama theory on various levels, moving from abstract to concrete – from the issue of drama translation as a whole, through specifics of Shakespearean translation, to the characteristics of Czech translations and translators of the particular play – “Othello”. In the middle section of the thesis, five different patterns are described that are then traced in the translations in the practical part. These include religious and demonic language, dark and light imagery, animal imagery, and corruption and disease imagery. The final part of the work consists of the evaluation of the comparative analysis of eleven Czech translations by various translators from the 19th to the 21st century.
