Mechanical interaction between granular media and pore fluid

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na mechanické chování granulární vrstvy, jejíž póry jsou saturovány kapalinou. Je známo, že přítomnost kapaliny může dra maticky ovlivňovat mechanické vlastnosti granulární vrstvy jako jsou její pevnost nebo stlačitelnost. V této práci je představen fyzikální model me chanických interakcí mezi granulárním materiálem a kapalinou, který byl implementován do numerického simulačního systému LAMMPS. Nume rický model byl otestován na analyticky řešitelných problémech zvodnění granulární vrstvy a difuze kapaliny porézním prostředí. Nakonec byl nume rický model použit k simulaci uniaxiální komprese. Výsledky modelu uka zují v souladu s experimentálními testy, že deformace granulární vrstvy je řízena takzvaným efektivním tlakem, který zohledňuje tlak pórové kapaliny.

Abstract:

This work is centered around mechanical behaviour of granular layers sa turated with fluid. The presence of fluids in the pores of the granular layer has profound effects on its mechanical properties, such as strength and compressibility. A physical model of mechanical interactions pertaining to this two-phase system is presented and implemented into an open-source numerical solver LAMMPS. The numerical model is tested against analy tically treatable problems on fluidization of a granular layer and diffusion of fluid in a porous medium. Consequently, the model is used to simu late uni-axial compression of a granular layer. The results demonstrate, in agreement with experimental tests, that deformation of the granular la yer is controlled by the effective stress, which accounts for the pore-fluid pressure, and not the full applied stress.
