Selected personality characteristics of childless women

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostmi bezdětnosti, osobnostních charakteristik v kontextu pětifaktorového modelu osobnosti a modelu temné triády a generativity. Cílem výzkumu bylo především zjistit, zda existují nějaké souvislosti mezi bezdětností a výše zmíněnými konstrukty, dále pak nejčastější důvody žen pro bezdětnost a odkládání mateřství. Také jsme zkoumali, zda spolu souvisí jednotlivé konstrukty a zda se tyto souvislosti liší mezi skupinami na základě mateřského statusu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 146 žen ve věku od 25 do 57 let. Celkem bylo v souboru 27 žen s vlastními dětmi, 25 bezdětných žen, které v budoucnu nechtějí děti, 24 bezdětných žen, které ze zatím ohledně mateřství nerozhodly a 70 bezdětných žen, které v budoucnu děti chtějí. Míra osobnostních faktorů pětifaktorového modelu byla zkoumána pomocí dotazníku Big five inventory (BFI-44), míra jednotlivých konstruktů temné triády byla zkoumána pomocí dotazníku Krátká temná triáda (SD3) a úroveň generativity byla zkoumána pomocí Loyolské škály generativity (LGS), která zkoumá generativní jednání. Výzkum byl prováděn na internetu. Výsledky ukázaly, že mezi nejčastější důvody k odkládání mateřství patří, že pro ženy zatím nenastala správná chvíle pro založení rodiny, nebo že nemají partnera. Nejčastější uváděné důvody pro dobrovolnou bezdětnost pak byly strach ze ztráty svobody, negativní vztah k dětem, špatné směřování společnosti a populace. Dále bylo zjištěno, že bezdětné ženy, které děti nechtějí, mají vyšší míru otevřenosti vůči zkušenosti než ženy s vlastními dětmi. U zkoumání souvislostí a rozdílů mezi skupinami jsme zjistili, že u všech skupin souvisí generativita a otevřenost vůči zkušenosti. Ani v jedné ze skupin nebyla nalezena souvislost generativity a temné triády. Byly nalezeny souvislosti mezi faktory pětifaktorového modelu osobnosti a temné triády, které se u jednotlivých skupin lišily.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topic of relationship between childlessness and personality in context of Big Five model and Dark Triad model and generativity. Main purpose of this study was to investigate if there exists some relationship between childlessness and constructs mentioned above. Additionally, we focused on the main reasons for voluntary childlessness and maternity postponing. We also investigated whether the constructs are related and if there is some relationship differences between groups based on their motherhood status. The research sample consisted of 146 women in the aged from 25 to 57 years. The sample included 27 women with their own children, 25 voluntary childless women, 24 childless women who didn´t make a decision about whether to have or don´t have children and 70 childless women who want to have children in the future. Rate of personality factors of five-factor model of personality was measured by Big Five Inventory (BFI-44) rate of Dark Triad factors were measured by Short Dark Triad (SD3). Generativity level was assessed using the Loyola Generativity Scale (LGS). Research was conducted on the internet. The results showed that the most frequent reasons for postponing maternity are that women feel like there wasn´t the right time to have children yet or that they do not have a partner. The most frequently cited reasons for voluntary childlessness were the fear of the loss of liberty, negative relationship to children, wrong way of development of society and population. It has also been found that childless women who do not want children have higher levels of Openness to experience than mothers. In examining the relationships and the differences between the groups, we found out that all of groups show a relationship between generativity and Openness to experience. All of groups show no relationship between generativity and Dark Triad. Relationships were found between the factors of the five-factor model of the personality and the Dark Triad traits were different across groups.
