The Honeymoon of Ferdinand and Evelina de Rothschild; a Record of the Rothschild Everyday Life in Schillersdorf in the 1860s.

Abstract:

Studie se snaží zaměřit na rekonstrukci každodenního života vídeňské větve Rothschildů v jejich hornoslezském panském sídle Šilheřovicích. Nejdůležitějším pramenem, který poskytuje vhled do běžného života vídeňských Rothschildů během jejich pobytu v Šilheřovicích, je zachovaná rodinná korespondence. Práce je založena na dvou výmluvných vyprávěčích - Ferdinandovi a Evelině de Rothschild. Tento novomanželský pár strávil závěrečnou etapu své svatební cesty v Šilheřovicích roku 1865. Psali a posílali dopisy obsahující zmínky o Šilheřovicích do Anglie. Zamýšlený cíl magisterské práce je poskytnout co nejvíce detailní přehled všech aspektů týkajících se rodinných aktivit v Šilheřovicích, zejména způsoby trávení volného času (procházení, jízda na koních, štvanice, čtení, úpravy panství, pořádání večírků, návštěvy místní šlechty atd.). Nejen Rothschildové a Šilheřovice, ale také okolní obyvatelé a místa jsou zmíněni. Mnohovrstevnatá práce se také pokouší poodhalit více z regionální historie 60. let 19. st., která je spojena s Rothschildy. Text je doplněn dalšími různorodými písemnými prameny a doprovázen ilustrativní obrazovou přílohou.

Abstract:

This study focuses on the reconstruction of the everyday life of the Viennese Rothschild family in their Upper Silesian country house, Schillersdorf. The most important source, giving an insight into the ordinary life of Viennese Rothschilds during their stay in Schillersdorf, is a surviving family correspondence. The work is based on two eloquent narrators - Ferdinand and, especially, Evelina de Rothschild. This newly married Rothschild couple spent the final stage of their honeymoon in Schillersdorf in 1865. They wrote and sent letters, containing mentions of Schillersdorf, to England. The intended aim of this thesis is to provide an, as detailed as possible, overview of all aspects regarding the family activities in Schillersdorf - primarily, the ways of spending leisure time (for example; walking, riding, hunting, reading, altering the estate, hosting parties, visiting local noblemen etc.). Not only the Rothschild family and Schillersdorf are mentioned, but there are also extracts regarding other inhabitants and places near Schillersdorf. The multi-layered work attempts to reveal more of 1860s local cultural history, linked with the Rothschild family as well. The text is completed by other miscellaneous writing sources and accompanied with illustrative visual supplement.
