Light as a Factor Affecting Organisms

Abstract:

Světlo lze charakterizovat jako určitou část elektromagnetického spektra, výrazně ovlivňující život organismů. Od počátku evoluce se organismy vyvíjely v podmínkách střídání dne a noci, které je řízeno přírodním zdrojem světla, Sluncem. Ve 20. století došlo k rapidnímu rozvoji umělého osvětlení, které narušilo délku dne, a tím byla ovlivněna pravidelnost cirkadiánních rytmů. Nejvíce je zřejmě narušena noční produkce melatoninu. Melatonin je hormon, který „přepíná“ metabolismus organismů do nočního režimu. Potlačení jeho produkce změnou délky dne může mít dopad na chování a fyziologické funkce organismů, především na reprodukci. Pozitivní vlivy určitého záření jsou přítomny ve fototerapii. Fototerapie je druh léčby, ve které je využíváno především ultrafialové záření a slouží k léčbě kožních onemocnění.

Abstract:

The life of organisms is significantly affected by a specific part of the electromagnetic spectrum, light. Through evolution, organisms have evolved under the Sun which is a natural source of light and provides both day and night cycles. During the 20th century, there was a rapid expansion of artificial light which disrupted the daylight duration. This disruption changed the regularity of circadian rhytms. Production of melatonin at night is probably the most affected process. Melatonin is a hormone which changes the metabolism of organisms to a night regime. Suppression of melatonin production by the change in daylight duration can have impacts on behaviour and physiological functions of organisms, mainly on reproduction. Positive effects of specific radiation are present in phototherapy. Phototherapy is a treatment which uses ultraviolet radiation. It is used for the treatment of dermal diseases.
