Massinger and Dekker's "The Virgin Martyr" in the Hands of German "Comedianten"

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce analyzuje dvě raně novověké dramatizace legendy o sv. Dorotě: jakubovskou tragédii The Virgin Martyr (1620) od Philipa Massingera a Thomase Dekkera a její německou adaptaci Die Heylige Martyrin Dorothea (1691?) z pera Johanna Georga Gettnera. Poté, co první kapitoly nastíní historický kontext anglických kočovných herců v německých zemích 17. století a vývoj dramatizace legendy sv. Doroty, je německá hra srovnána s anglickým originálem z dramatického hlediska. Ve výsledné analýze je dále zohledněna divadelní realita obou her a dramatická kultura Gettnerova uměleckého zázemí, vedoucí k závěru, že Gettnerova adaptace představuje umělecké dílo nezávislé na anglickém originálu, neboť snoubí jakubovskou dramaturgii s konvencemi německého baroka. V apendixu práce je přiložen filologický překlad německého rukopisu do angličtiny.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis analyzes two early modern dramatizations of the legend of St Dorothy: the Jacobean tragedy The Virgin Martyr (1620) by Philip Massinger and Thomas Dekker and its German adaptation Die Heylige Martyrin Dorothea (1691?) from the pen of Johann Georg Gettner. After the historical context of English itinerant players in the German lands in the 17th century and the tradition of dramatizing St Dorothy’s legend are explained, the two plays are compared from the dramatic perspective. By taking into account also the theatrical reality of the plays and the dramatic culture of Gettner’s artistic milieu, the thesis argues that Gettner’s adaptation of The Virgin Martyr constitutes an original work of art, as it intertwines the Jacobean dramaturgy with the conventions of the German Baroque. A philological English translation of the German manuscript is enclosed in the thesis’s appendix.
