Complexity and its relation to mental illnesses

Abstract:

Práce popisuje tři přístupy ke konstruování významů, a to psychologii osobních konstruktů, teorii dialogického self a teorii integrativní komplexity. Teoretická část jednak srovnává pojetí komplexity v těchto teoriích. Srovnání přitom vede k závěru, že přestože teorie vychází z podobných teoretických základů, chybí mezi nimi snaha o vzájemnou komunikaci. Teoretická část dále popisuje hypotetické předpoklady i empirické studie týkající se souvislostí mezi určitou mírou komplexity a psychopatologickými projevy (konkrétně příznaky deprese či schizofrenie). Prvním cílem práce je srovnat indexy komplexity odvozené z uvedených tří teorií s ohledem na jejich souběžnou validitu. Druhým cílem je ověřit dosavadní předpoklady o souvislosti mezi komplexitou a psychopatologickými symptomy. Z metod je využit Test repertoáru rolových konstruktů, Revidovaný Test sémantického výběru, Repertoár osobních pozic a škála integrativní komplexity aplikovaná na příběhy vyprávěné na motivy tabulí Tematicko-apercepčního testu. Výsledky ukazují na určitou míru souběžné validity indexů komplexity, která se ovšem neprokázala pro všechny indexy. Tyto výsledky, avšak nekonzistentní, naznačují určitou přenositelnost struktury konstruování mezi testem a retestem, mezi verbálními a neverbálními indexy posuzujícími konstruování odlišných elementů. Výsledky dále naznačují, že příznaky deprese se výrazně nepojí se strukturou konstruování. Naopak se strukturou konstruování souvisí příznaky schizofrenie. Struktura, která se pojí s příznaky schizofrenie, může být buď rozpadlá a nekoherentní, nebo naopak rigidní.

Abstract:

The thesis describes three approaches to a meaning construing, namely the personal construct psychology, the theory of dialogical self and the integrative complexity theory. On the one hand the theoretical chapters compare interpretations of complexity in these theories. The comparison leads to a conclusion that although these approaches are based on similar theoretical assumptions the attempt to communicate with each other is missing. The theoretical chapters also describe assumptions as well as empirical findings focused on a relationship between a particular level of complexity and psychopathological symptoms (specifically symptoms of depression and schizophrenia). The first aim of this study is to compare the complexity indexes related to the above mentioned theories with regard to their concurrent validity. The second aim is to verify present assumptions concerning the relationship between the complexity indexes and the psychopathological symptoms. The methods used are Role Construct Repertory Test, the Revised Semantic Selection Test, Personal Position Repertoire and the integrative complexity scale which is applied to stories based on the picture motives of Thematic Apperception Test. The results indicate some degree of a construct structure overlap between a test and a retest, between verbal and nonverbal complexity indexes assessing a construing of different elements. Nevertheless these findings are not consistent. The results also indicate that symptoms of depression are not significantly related to the complexity indexes. On the contrary, the construct structure is connected with symptoms of schizophrenia. This structure may be either disintegrated and incoherent or rigid
