The Figure of the Vampire: Schizoanalysis and the Commodification of Anxiety in Gothic and Horror Fiction

Abstract:

Tato dizertace analyzuje vybraná díla anglofonní gotické a hororové fikce 19., 20., a raného 21. století s hlavním důrazem na interpretaci vývoje postavy upíra. Dizertace zkoumá postavu upíra skrze aplikaci teorie touhy ve vztahu ke konceptualizaci subjektivity představené v knize Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia Volume 1 (1972), první z kolaborací francouzského filozofa Gillese Deleuze a francouzského psychoanalytika Félixe Guattariho. Dizertace se za pomoci aplikace Deleuzoguattariovské perspektivy, zaměřené na radikalizaci psychoanalytického myšlení Sigmunda Freuda a Jacquese Lacana, a jeho syntézu s historicky-materialistickou kritikou kapitalistického módu společenské produkce snaží o otevření postavy upíra širší interpretační perspektivě, než se zdá být možná v rámci obvykle aplikovaných psychoanalytických a historicky materialistických přístupů. Dizertace má za cíl interpretovat upírovu funkci v kultuře jako podmíněnou kapitalistickým módem společenské produkce. Dizertace především diskutuje funkci estetické evokace úzkosti ve vztahu k postavě upíra ve fikci jako, na jednu stranu, evokující pozici kritického vzdoru vůči kapitalistické formě společenské produkce, ale která, na druhou stranu, slouží orientaci na zisk, charakteristickou pro kapitalistický mód společenské produkce. Dizertace pojmenovává proces kapitalistického zužitkovávání a rekuperace úzkosti evokované ve spojení k postavě upíra v gotické a hororové fikci 'komodifikace úzkosti.' Komodifikace úzkosti je navržena jako proces, ve kterém je úzkost spojená s upírem produkována a nabídnuta ke konzumaci jako přitažlivá komodita a tím zajišťuje reprodukci kapitalistického subjektu, který poslušně přijímá za vlastní tržní vztahy a jejich vliv na všechny aspekty života a tím přijímá poddanost vykořisťujícím procesům jako přirozenému aspektu své existence. Ačkoliv dizertace nachází bohatý estetický potenciál postavy upíra k vyvolávání úzkosti jako znepokojivého znaku kapitalistického vykořisťování daných forem společenské subjektivity která upírovi čelí, dizertace také nachází postavu upíra více než často stvořenou způsobem, který podporuje kapitalistický mód společenské produkce a moderního, civilizovaného, kapitalistického společenského pořádku. Ve světle této analýzy se zdá, že stravitelné, socializované a domestikované formy postavy upíra ve fikci pozdního 20. a raného 21. století nabývají formy, která málokdy přesahuje limity zprostředkované fantaskní iluze týkající se možnosti osvobození od nepříznivé pozice neurotického, frustrovaného, konzumujícího a neoliberálního kapitalistického společenského subjektu. Na této trajektorii je život upíra podmíněn jeho shodou s životem charakterizujícím společenský subjekt pod nadvládou kapitalistického způsobu společenské produkce: potlačený život svázaný dluhem k průmyslovým podmínkám jeho vzkvétání, nedůstojný život vykořisťovaný za účelem nelidských ekonomických cílů, a vyčerpaný život, vyprázdněný o svou podstatu a předváděný jako nemrtvé vzezření uplynulé vitálnosti. Ve světle těchto závěrů dizertace klade důraz na citlivost k radikálním kritickým možnostem podvědomých aspektů estetické evokace gotické a hororové fikce a volá po osvobození jejího revolučního potenciálu zpod domény kapitalistické orientace na zisk.

Abstract:

This dissertation analyzes selected works of 19th, 20th, and early 21st century Anglophone Gothic and Horror fiction with the primary focus on interpreting the development of the figure of the vampire. The dissertation explores the figure of the vampire through the application of theory of desire relating to the notion of subjectivity presented in Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia Volume 1 (1972), one of the collaborative works by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the French psychoanalyst Félix Guattari. The dissertation attempts to open the figure of the vampire to a broader interpretative perspective than appears possible within the often applied psychoanalytic and historical-materialist frameworks by way of considering the fictional figure of the vampire from a Deleuzoguattarian perspective, aimed at radicalizing the psychoanalytic thought of Sigmund Freud and of Jacques Lacan and synthesizing it with historical-materialist critique of the capitalist mode of social production. The dissertation aims to interpret the vampire’s functioning in culture as conditioned by the capitalist mode of social production. Specifically, the dissertation discusses the function of the evocation of anxiety in relation to the figure of the vampire in fiction as something which can, on the one hand, energize a critical position of resistance to the capitalist form of social production but which is more often evoked in order to, on the other hand, serve the profit-oriented logic of the capitalist mode of social production. The dissertation terms the process of capitalistic accommodating, appropriating, or recuperating of the power of anxiety evoked in connection with the figure of the vampire in Gothic and Horror fiction the ‘commodification of anxiety.’ The commodification of anxiety is conceptualized as a process in which anxiety evoked by the vampire comes to be produced and provided for consumption as an attractive commodity and thus assures the reproduction of a capitalist subject who docilely internalizes market relations as dictating every aspect of their lives and accepts being subjected to exploitative consumption as a naturalized aspect of their existence. Although the dissertation finds ample aesthetic potential for the figure of the vampire to evoke anxiety as an alarming signal of capitalist exploitation of the particular shapes of social subjectivity facing the vampire, the dissertation finds the figure of the vampire more than often being produced in a way benefiting the capitalist mode of social production and of the modern, civilized, capitalist social order. Considering the present findings, it seems that the palatable, socialized, domesticated, and humanized late-20th and early-21st century figurations of the vampire are produced as little more than a vicarious phantasy of liberation from the unfavorable position of the neuroticized, frustrated, consumerist, and neoliberal capitalist social subjectivity. On this trajectory, the vampire appears to be allowed only the same kind of life as any social subject under the domain of the inhuman, monstrous demands of the capitalist mode of social production: a repressed life bound by debt to the industrial conditions of its thriving, an undignified one controlled by exploitation of life as means to inhuman economic ends, and an exhausted one emptied of substance and paraded only as an undead semblance of former liveliness. In light of these findings, the dissertation attempts to highlight the importance of sensitivity to the radical critical impetus of the unconscious dimensions of aesthetic evocations of Gothic and Horror fiction and to recover the revolutionary potential of this aesthetic evocation from suppression under the domain of the capitalist profit-oriented logic.
