Black Blues and White Rock: Jimi Hendrix and Racial Polarization in the Sixties

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá hudbou Jimiho Hendrixe, s jejíž pomocí se hudebník pokoušel předat svou vizi o překonání rasových rozdílů, a přijetím jeho tvorby ve Velké Británii a ve Spojených Státech v druhé polovině šedesátých let, kdy se veřejné mínění afroamerické komunity začalo přiklánět k radikálnímu přístupu k boji za občanská práva. Práce je zaměřena na to, jak rasová situace v šedesátých letech ovlivnila chápání Hendrixovy rockové hudby, jež byla výrazně ovlivněna Britskou scénou, a tudíž považována za „bělošskou“. Tehdejší chápání hudebních žánrů bylo silně rasově polarizované následkem separatistických přístupů, které dominovaly v debatě o černošské hudbě a umění. Blues bylo považováno za černošský styl, zatímco rocková hudba byla přisuzována bělochům. Rasový separatismus v hudbě vyvíjel nátlak na muzikanty a nutil je do binárních kategorií „bílé“ nebo „černé“ hudby, což z Hendrixe dělá specifický případ černošského muzikanta hrajícího bělošskou hudbu. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část se zabývá fakty z Hendrixova života, jež hrály roli ve formování jeho náhledu na afroamerickou identitu, zejména pak vliv jeho pobytu ve Velké Británii v roce 1966, kdy se britská hudební scéna silně inspirovala bluesovou hudbou. Druhá část má za cíl prozkoumat konflikt mezi Hendrixovým přístupem k hudbě jako rasově neutrálnímu umění a přístupem zastánců separatistických teorií, kteří se snažili zachovat jasnou hranici mezi „černou“ a „bílou“ hudbou a tím ochránit afroamerickou tradici před kulturní apropriací. Třetí část je pak zaměřena na analýzu Hendrixovy písně „Voodoo Chile“ a jejím pokračováním v písni „Voodoo Child (Slight Return)“. Zatímco první písní se hudebník snažil zdůraznit svoji příslušnost k afroamerické komunitě a postupný odklon k psychedelii americké kontrakultury, druhá píseň se nedá jednoznačně přidružit ani jedné rase, a tím boří hranice mezi rasově segregovanými hudebními styly. Cílem práce jako celku je tedy rozbor Hendrixovy hudby v kontextu rasové debaty šedesátých let a prozkoumání konfliktních teorií rasového separatismu a jeho překonání.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with Jimi Hendrix’s message of racial transcendence in his music, and its reception in Great Britain and the United States in the second half of the 1960s when the slogan “Black Power” started infiltrating the public consciousness of black Americans and initiated an era of black nationalism. With a primary focus on how the racial situation in the sixties influenced the reception of Hendrix’s rock sound and his beliefs about the potential of rock music as a means to communicate a vision of a racially inclusive society, the aim of this thesis is to analyze how the essentialist notions which were dominating the discourse on black music in 1960s America were restricting the artistic freedom of both black and white musicians by polarizing the musical discourse to reflect their philosophy of racial separatism, and thus pressuring musicians into binary categories of blackness or whiteness. Jimi Hendrix and his reception serves as a case study which is provided in three parts: the first part analyzes Hendrix’s biography, with an emphasis on his relocation to Britain in 1966 at the time of the British Blues Revival and how it influenced his career and his understanding of his racial identity; the second part is concerned with Hendrix’s return to America, with a focus given to the conflict between Hendrix’s musical vision of racial inclusion and the rejection of that vision by the proponents of black aesthetics whose philosophy was influenced by an attempt to discontinue white appropriation of black music; and finally, the third part analyzes Hendrix’s song “Voodoo Chile” and its continuation “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” arguing that the two songs reflect Hendrix’s rootedness in the black blues tradition and his desire to transcend its constraints. Upon conclusion, the thesis will have provided a thorough analysis of the context in which Hendrix was proposing his post-racial utopia, elucidating the reasons why it was not accepted by his contemporaries and offering an analysis of his music as an illustration of his vision where blackness ceases to be a constrictive category.
