Imaginative geographies of India in the Czech secondary education

Abstract:

Motivací pro vznik této diplomové práce je problematizace zažité reprezentace Indie ve výuce zeměpisu jako komplikované, tradiční, nábožensky a sociálně rigidní země. Indická společnost se v posledních dekádách rychle mění, především v ekonomickém a společenském ohledu. Tyto skutečnosti mnohdy nejsou ve středoškolské výuce regionální geografie Indie reflektovány, čímž dochází k nekritickému předávání stereotypů. Diplomová práce si klade dva cíle. Prvním z nich je identifikace a interpretace imaginativních geografií Indie ve středoškolské výuce zeměpisu. S pomocí obsahové analýzy učebnic a hloubkových rozhovorů s učiteli byly identifikovány stereotypní představy, jež jsou s výukou regionální geografie Indie spojovány. Následně byly za pomoci diskuse odborné literatury tyto stereotypy interpretovány a problematizovány. Druhým cílem práce byl návrh vhodných výukových aktivit, s cílem vytvořit prostor pro pochopení současného každodenního života v Indii. Dříve identifikované stereotypy posloužily jako východiska pro tvorbu tří výukových lekcí, založených na teorii pedagogického konstruktivismu. Konkrétní se výukové aktivity věnují tématům kulturní rozmanitosti indické společnosti, každodennosti indického života a rozvoji progresivního terciéru založeném na outsourcingu.

Abstract:

The motivation for the creation of this diploma thesis is the issue of the experienced representation of India in the teaching of geography as a complicated, traditional, religious and socially rigid country. Indian society has been changing rapidly in recent decades, especially in economic and social terms. These facts are often not reflected in the secondary school teaching of regional geography of India – which enables an uncritical transmission of stereotypes. The diploma thesis has two goals. The first is the identification and interpretation of imaginative geographies of India in high school geography teaching. With the help of content analysis of textbooks and in-depth interviews with teachers, stereotypical ideas that are associated with the teaching of regional geography of India were identified. Subsequently, with the help of a discussion of the literature, we interpreted and problematized these stereotypes. The second goal of the work was to design further educational activities to help create space for understanding contemporary daily life in India. The previously identified stereotypes served as a starting point for the creation of three lessons based on the theory of pedagogical constructivism. Specifically, the teaching activities address the topics of cultural diversity of Indian society, the everyday life of Indian life and the development of a progressive tertiary based on outsourcing.
