Cognitive and defense abilities of the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) against the brood parasite common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)

Abstract:

Predátoři a hnízdní parazité ohrožují přežití a reprodukční zdatnost hnízdících ptáků, ovšem ti se těmto hrozbám umí bránit. Ve své práci jsem se zabývala vztahem mezi typickým hnízdním parazitem kukačkou obecnou (Cuculus canorus) a jejím hostitelem ťuhýkem obecným (Lanius collurio). O kukačce je známo, že v posledních desetiletích opouští ťuhýka jako svého potenciálního hostitele, což je možná způsobeno jeho intenzivní obranou vůči ní. U hnízd jsem prezentovala atrapy kukaček v obou barevných morfách, atrapu nebezpečného predátora dospělých pěvců - krahujce, neškodnou kontrolu - hrdličku a další dvě modifikované atrapy kukaček, abych sledovala reakce ťuhýků a jejich schopnost rozpoznat různou hrozbu. Došla jsem k závěru, že ťuhýk obecný aktivně vyhání kukačky ze svého teritoria a dokáže je rozpoznávat od dalších druhů, což patrně spolu s jejich vysokou schopností rozpoznávat kukaččí vejce ve vlastní snůšce, vede k poklesu míry hnízdního parazitismu na jeho hnízdech.

Abstract:

Predators and brood parasites threaten the survival and reproductive successess of nesting birds, but these are able to defend brood against them. I examined the relationship between the typical brood parasite common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) and its host red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio). The cuckoo is known to have recently left the red-backed shrike as its potential host, possibly due to shrikes intense defense against cuckoos. I presented the dummies of the cuckoos in both colored morphs, the dummy of the dangerous predator of adult passerines - the sparrowhawk, harmless control - the turtle dove and two other modified cuckoo dummies in the proximity of the shrike's nests to observe the shrike's reactions and their ability to recognize a different threat. I came to the conclusion that the red-backed shrike actively expels the cuckoo from its territory and can recognize it from other species, which, along with their high ability to recognize cuckoo eggs in their own clutch, leads to a decrease in nesting parasitism in its nests.
