Utraquists and Cultural History of Sin in the Reformation

Abstract:

Zejména díky svému ranému vzniku je možné vnímat české reformační hnutí s husitskými kořeny za jednu ze specifických, ale neméně významných, kapitol z reformačních dějin v Evropě. Z pochopitelných příčin se utrakvismus ve svém pozdním období nestal klíčovým tématem historiografie 16. století. Mnohem větší pozornost je mu věnována ve století předchozím, kdy se potýkal jak s římským katolictvím, tak s radikálnějšími proudy domácí reformace. Přestože se v 16. století dostávaly do popředí zájmu nové náboženské proudy, utrakvisté vedle nich museli nadále existovat. Jakým způsobem jejich soužití vedle nové konfesijní konkurence vypadalo, je stále obsahem historických diskuzí. Kulturní činnost aktérů však po sobě musela zanechat určité stopy, které mohou pomoci poodhalit důležité souvislosti v odborné rozpravě. Obraz z kulturních dějin zaměřený na utrakvistický prostor v kontextu probíhající reformace, se stal základním vymezením bádání, jejichž výsledkem je předkládaná práce. Přestože má pojem ?kultura? různě široké definice, kulturně-historická bádání pracují zpravidla jen s jednotlivostmi, které ke kultuře přiřazujeme. Pro pohled do utrakvistické kultury ve sledovaném období se práce zaměřila na fenomén hříchu, který výrazným způsobem formoval křesťanské náboženství. Hřích je významným prvkem křesťanské teologie, ale dosavadní bádání poukázalo na to, že teologická teorie hříchu má výraznou reflexi v kulturních projevech. V 16. a 17. století je klíčové konfesijní pozadí pramenů vhodných pro bádání v kulturních dějinách. Zatímco zahraniční historiografie si všímala katolického i protestantského prostředí (Delumeau, Bossy, Newhauser) tak utrakvistická tradice zůstala stranou zájmu. I když dějinám utrakvismu v 16. století se věnovaly zásadní práce církevní historie (Hrejsa, David), kulturní historie hříchu zůstala nepovšimnuta. Analýzou vybraných pramenů z utrakvistického prostředí (J. V. Cykáda, P. Bydžovský, B., Bílejovský, V. L. Rvačovský, V. P. Vodňanský, akta a dopisy utrakvistické konzistoře) se práce zaměřuje na kulturní a myšlenkovou reflexi hříchu.

Abstract:

This Ph. D. dissertation analyses issues connected with the concept of sin on preserving sources of Utraquism in the 16th century. As the latest research has shown, it is a distinctive tradition following the onset of Bohemian reformation and, in many respects, preservation elements of local mediaeval Christianity. From this point of view, the thesis analyses texts created by both "official" defenders of the traditional Utraquist position in the first half of the 16th century, i.e. Bohuslav Bílejovský, Pavel Bydžovský and Jan Václav Cykáda and common priests (Václav Porcius Vodňanský, Vavřinec Leander Rvačovský and letters of the Utraquist Consistory). The first part of the analysis attempts to look at priests as individual actors of religious history. Their behavior reflects the typical motifs of Medieval popular Christianity. They were also confronted with the ideas of the more radical reformations of the sixteenth century. The Consistory, a clerical body of church administration, worked at building up Utraquist identity. This was initially directed against the domestic radical tradition, the Unity of Brethren, and later with the influence of the foreign Reformation. It tries to present priests as a specific social group. The micro-historical case study of Jan Lahvička can serve as an example of the above-mentioned thesis. Further this study tries to show how the Christian concept of original sin influenced contemporary culture as well as texts from the late Utraquist authors. Thus, the writings of Cykáda, Porcius Vodňanský, and Leandr Rvačovský - hitherto little studied by cultural historians - form no exception. The problems associated with original sin, deriving from the biblical story of Adam and Eve, were widely known among the broad strata of population. However, the problem was reinterpreted in various ways by literary sources in order to simplify the learned theory for the less educated populace. Furthermore, the story was utilised as an authoritative criterion for elucidating various issues in contemporary society. The Utraquist sources offer an image that - on one hand - fits the cultural context of the Reformation era but - on the other hand - demonstrates certain Utraquist specificity. Tracts by Bohuslav Bílejovský and Pavel Bydžovský allows us to observe how, through the doctrine of seven deadly sins, they profess the tradition of Bohemian reformation, thus preserving elements of the local medieaval Christianity aginst the background of a clash with other confessional denominations of the 16th century. Special attention was payed to Masopust, a book by Vavřinec Leander Rvačovský, is remarkable for reflection of the cultural environment. The reader can encounter original elaboration of the seven sins to which we can apply theses by Richard Newhauser on transformation of functionality of the seven sins at the turn of Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. This thesis tries to explore various contexts of using the concept of sin - confessional strifes, building Utraquist identity, the tensions between priest and his parishioners. In doing so it also tackles various historiographical issues and can serve as proof material for theories of authors such as Zdeněk V. David, Richard G. Newhauser, Jean Delumeau or John Bossy.
