Security analysis of cryptocurrency hardware wallets

Abstract:

Hardwarové peněženky pro kryptoměny jsou zařízení určená k bezpečnému ukládání klíčů a podepisování kryptoměnových transakcí. Základní myšlenka těchto zařízení je, že tajemství nikdy neopustí peněženku, která není přímo připojena k internetu a vyžaduje lidskou interakci. Kritickou součástí generování nové peněženky i podepisování transakcí je správně fungující generátor náhodných čísel. I když musí uživatelé důvěřovat peněžence se svými financemi, neexistuje jednoduchý způsob, jak ověřit bezpečnost těchto zařízení. Cílem této práce je navrhnout a vytvořit systém schopný fyzicky interagovat s různými peněženkami a použít tento systém ke shromáždění dat z řady takových peněženek dostupných v laboratoři CRoCS. Tato data jsou následně analyzována za účelem ověření bezpečnosti generátorů náhodných čísel.

Abstract:

Cryptocurrency hardware wallets are devices designed to securely store keys and sign cryptocurrency transactions. The basic idea behind those devices is that the secrets never leave the wallet, which is not directly connected to the internet and requires human interaction. A critical part of both generating a new wallet and signing a transaction is a correctly working random number generator. Even though users are required to trust the wallet with their funds, there is no simple way of verifying security of those devices. The goal of this thesis is to design and build a framework capable of physically interacting with different wallets and use this system to gather data from a number of such wallets available in the CRoCS laboratory. This data is then analyzed to verify the security of the underlying random number generators.
