Difference between Information and Disinformation. Comparing Media Literacy in Representatives of Generations X and Y

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkoumáním rozdílů ve schopnosti rozlišit informace a dezinformace u představitelů generací X a Y. Práce je vnitřně členěna na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část práce se skládá ze čtyř kapitol. První kapitola teoretické části se zabývá vysvětlením základních pojmů, pojmů mediální gramotnosti a jsou uvedeny sociologické teorie, které vysvětlují faktory, které mají vliv na získávání kompetencí v oblasti používání médií. Druhá kapitola uvádí rozdíly mezi generacemi X a Y, jejich popis v současné sociologii, psychologii a mediálních studiích. Třetí kapitola vysvětluje problematiku informace a dezinformace a uvede možnosti jejich rozlišení v kontextu aktuální historicko-mediální situace charakteristické nástupem digitálních médií, sociálních sítí a umělé inteligence (AI). Čtvrtá kapitola teoretické části práce se zaměřuje na konkrétní příklady a ukázky dezinformací v rámci prezidentské kampaně v České republice v roce 2023, které se objevovaly na sociálních sítích. V praktické části práce je pomocí dotazníkového šetření ověřena úroveň mediální gramotnosti u respondentů spadající do generace X a Y, kteří jsou zároveň zařazeni do pracovního poměru v rámci územních samosprávných celků v Karlovarském kraji. Cílem dotazníkového šetření je zjištění nejčastějších reakcí na dezinformace ohledně prezidentské kampaně v roce 2023 ve zvolené skupině respondentů. Výsledek šetření vyvracuje či potvrzuje předpoklad, že představitelé generace X jsou méně schopni rozlišit informace od dezinformací než představitelé generace Y.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the examination of differences in the ability to distinguish information and disinformation among representatives of generations X and Y. The thesis is internally divided into theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter of the theoretical part deals with the explanation of basic concepts, the concepts of media literacy and sociological theories that explain the factors that affect the acquisition of competencies in the field of media use. The second chapter presents the differences between generations X and Y, their description in contemporary sociology, psychology and media studies. The third chapter explains the issue of information and disinformation and presents the possibilities of their differentiation in the context of the current historical-media situation characterized by the advent of digital media and social networks and artificial intelligence (AI). The fourth chapter of the theoretical part of the thesis focuses on specific examples and examples of disinformation during the presidential campaign in the Czech Republic in 2023, which appeared on social networks. In the practical part of the thesis, the level of media literacy of respondents falling into generations X and Y is verified by means of a questionnaire survey, who are also employed within the territoril self-governing units in the Karlovy Vary region. The aim of the questionnaire survey is to identify the most frequent reactions to disinformation about the 2023 presidential campaign in a selected group of respondents. The outcome of the investigation refutes or confirms the assumption that Generation X representatives are less able to distinguish information from disinformation than Millennials.
