Attitudes of Nurses to Dying in Chronic Intensive Care

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou smrti a umírání na oddělení chronické intenzivní péče a zaměřuje se na postoje sester k této problematice. Pozitivní postoj sestry k péči o umírajícího pacienta je nezastupitelným faktorem pro zvládnutí péče o takto nemocné. V teoretické části práce jsou popsána oddělení, kde je poskytována chronická intenzivní péče. Poměrná část je věnována psychické zátěži sester v paliativní péči, jejich potřebám a možným strategiím při zvládání stresových situací, které jsou s umíráním spojené. Dále jsou popsány specifické problematické oblasti v paliativní medicíně. V empirické části jsou prezentovány výsledky výzkumu. Těžiště práce tvoří kvantitativní výzkumné šetření, prováděné u všeobecných sester na odděleních chronické intenzivní péče. Výzkumné šetření je zaměřeno na zjištění po-stojů, které sestry zaujímají při péči o umírající pacienty. Dále je zjišťováno, jaké podpůrné faktory sestrám pomáhají při péči o těžce nemocné a umírající. Praktickým výstupem předložené práce je informační brožura pro všeobecné sestry, která obsahuje důležité kroky pro správnou duševní hygienu.

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the issue of death and dying in the chronic intensive care unit and focuses on the attitudes of nurses to this matter. Positive attitude of a nurse towards caring for a dying patient is an irreplaceable factor. Different wards where chronic intensive care is provided are described in the theoretical part of the work. The substantial part is devoted to the mental burden of palliative care nurses, their needs and possible strategies in managing stress situations associated with dying. Furthermore specific problem areas in palliative medicine are described. The research results are presented in the empirical section. The focus of work is a quantitative research survey of general nurses in chronic intensive care units. The research investigation is aimed at identifying the attitudes of nurses when taking care of dying patients. It also examines the factors which help nurses to care for the severely ill and dying. The practical outcome of the submitted work is an information brochure for general nurses which contains important steps for good mental hygiene.
