Ecology, taxonomy and phylogeny of earwigs (Dermaptera)

Abstract:

Dermaptera is one of the less-studied insect orders. The phylogeny of earwigs and some biological and ecological aspects are summarized in the presented dissertation thesis. The thesis consists of four studies focused on the molecular phylogeny and classification of the genus Chelidurella Verhoeff, stat. restit.; the food preferences of earwigs, and the vertical distribution of earwigs on the trees in a temperate lowland forest. The genus Chelidurella (Forficulidae: Anechurinae) includes nine morphologically very similar species that have their centre of distribution in the Alps. The phylogenetic position and classification of the genus Chelidurella were determined based on molecular data. The key morphological characters traditionally used to identify Chelidurella species are highly variable within species; thus, the molecular approach is necessary for species determination. Food biology is an aspect of earwig biology that has been studied very little, and it is well documented only in a few species. The aims of the detailed studies included in this thesis were to determine the food preferences of the selected species of Central European earwigs and assess their potential importance in agriculture and forestry. The studied species Euborellia annulipes, alien in European greenhouses, is a potential pest of cultivated plants, according to the large portion of plant tissues consumed. The distribution and diet composition of the three earwig species from the temperate floodplain forest - Apterygida media, Chelidurella acanthopygia and Forficula auricularia - are most closely associated with the species of the occupied tree. Due to its high densities and preference of an animal diet, A. media could reduce the populations of pests of forest trees. The distribution of nymph and adult earwigs was also studied in the context of their vertical distribution in a temperate floodplain forest. The vertical stratification of A. media differed among developmental stages and in its abundance among tree species.

Abstract:

Škvoři jsou jedni z málo prozkoumaných hmyzích řádů. V předložené dizertační práci je shrnuta fylogeneze škvorů a některé jejich biologické a ekologické aspekty. Práce se skládá ze čtyř studií zaměřených na molekulární fylogenezi a klasifikaci rodu Chelidurella Verhoeff, stat. restit., potravní preference škvorů a vertikální distribuci škvorů na stromech v lužním lese mírného pásu. Rod Chelidurella (Forficulidae: Anechurinae) zahrnuje devět morfologicky velmi podobných druhů s centrem rozšíření v Alpách. Fylogenetická pozice a klasifikace rodu Chelidurella byla určena za pomocí molekulárních dat. Klíčové morfologické znaky, tradičně používané ke stanovení druhů, jsou značně variabilní i v rámci samotných druhů a proto je nezbytný molekulární přístup. V rámci biologie škvorů je jejich potravní biologie velmi málo prostudována a existuje pouze málo údajů u většiny druhů. Cílem podrobných studií bylo určit potravní preference vybraných středoevropských druhů a posoudit jejich význam v zemědělství a lesnictví. Nepůvodní druh v evropských sklenících, Euborellia annulipes, je dle velké části zkonzumovaného rostlinného materiálu potenciální škůdce kultivovaných rostlin. Distribuce a složení potravy tří zjištěných druhů z lužního lesa mírného pásu - Apterygida media, Chelidurella acanthopygia a Forficula auricularia - jsou nejvíce spojeny s druhem stromu. Vzhledem k vysokým hustotám a upřednostňování živočišné potravy, by mohl druh A. media snižovat populace hmyzích škůdců na lesních dřevinách. Distribuce nymfálních stádií a dospělců škvorů byla také studována v kontextu jejich vertikální stratifikace na stromech v lužním lese mírného pásu. U druhu A. media byly zjištěny rozdíly ve vertikální distribuci mezi vývojovými stádii a také rozdíly v abundanci mezi druhy dřevin.
