The Dominant as a way of Consolidation of Roman Absolutism

Abstract:

První velký zájem o pozdní římskou říši ? dominát souvisel s vydáním již klasického Gibbonova díla History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (6 svazků vydaných v rozmezí let 1776-1788). Od té doby uplynuly přes dvě staletí a zahraniční historiografie se začíná o dominát opět ve větší míře zajímat. U nás se čistě dominátem zabýval pouze uznávaný historik prof. J. Češka. Proto jsem chtěl toto téma opět nastínit a poukázat na důležité procesy, jež stály u počátku dominátu. Jeho zrod začal právě osobou Diocletiana a končí Constantinem I. Proto po představení doby chaosu a krize, jež dominátu předchází a ve velké míře dopomohla k přerodu v jeho absolutistickou vládu, přecházím k hlavní části práce. Tou je doba vlády Diocletiana s jeho důležitými reformami. Těmito změnami se jednoznačně odklonil od doby principátu. Jako hlavní přínos jeho politiky představuji reformy v oblasti armády a administrativy, které pomohly stabilizovat říši. Dalším výrazným počinem jeho vlády bylo zřízení tzv. tetrarchie, jež měla, kromě lepšího prosazování panovnické moci a obrany říše, zajistit nástupnický systém, vylučující další krizi. Tak měla být stabilita říše, jíž se mu podařilo docílit, zachována. Hlavní cíl jeho politiky, tedy tetrarchii, se nepodařilo udržet a rozpadla se téměř ihned po jeho odstoupení. Nastala občanská válka, z níž vyšel vítězně syn jednoho z augustů Constantin I. Ač se tetrarchii nepodařilo udržet při životě, další Diocletianovy reformy jej přežily a navázal na ně právě Constantinus, který tak zrod dominátu dokončil. Reformní činnost Diocletiana a Constantina I. se tak stala důležitým momentem, jež umožnila zachování římské říše a její další vývoj, směřující postupně od pohanské společnosti ke křesťanské, která se poté kontinuálně přetransformovala v raný křesťanský středověk.

Abstract:

The first big wave of interest about the late Roman Empire - Dominate associated with the release of the classic Gibbon's work History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire ( 6 volumes published in between 1776 - 1788 ) . Over two centuries passed and the foreign historiography is starting to become more interested about the Dominate. There was only prof. J. Češka, a highly recognized historian, who was concerned entirely with the Dominate in our country. That is the reason why I wanted to point out the important processes which stood at the beginning of the Dominate. Its inception began with Diocletian and ends with Constantin I. After the introduction of the age of chaos and crisis, which precedes the Dominate and helps with the transformation into the dominance, I lead my work to the main part which is the age under the reign of Diocletian and his important reforms. Those reforms definitely led him from the age of the Principate. The most important reforms of his politics are the ones in the army and administration which helped with the stabilization of the empire. The next important act of his reign was the establishment of the Tetrarchy. The Tetrarchy should not only help with the enforcing of power and defence of the empire, but it should set up the successor system eliminating possible next crisis. Those reforms were successful and the empire were stabilised. The main aim of his politics failed and straight after his resignation the Tetrarchy fell apart. A civil war that ensued ended with the victory of Constantine I., a son of one of the former Augustus. Although the Tetrarchy failed other Diocletian's reforms succeeded and Constantine I. continued with them and the inception of Dominate was accomplished. The reformation of Diocletian and Constantin I. happened to be the important moment which enabled continuation of The Roman Empire and its next development heading from Paganism towards Christianity.
