Interaction between mirror inversion and personality judgement of a facial image

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje vztahu zrcadel a odhadu osobnostních vlastností z hlediska odhadu osobnostních rysů a aplikací zrcadel. Obsahuje kvalitativní studii zahrnující 31 participantů (64,5 % žen, průměrný věk 22,8 let) kteří hodnotili osm fotografií ženských obličejů, kde čtyři byly původní fotografie a další čtyři jejich přesné zrcadlově otočené varianty. Participanti u osobního rozhovoru popisovali, jaké by žena na fotografii mohla mít vlastnosti a jejich odpovědi byly analyzovány a porovnány dle podmínek zrcadlového převrácení a fotografií bez převrácení. Prezentovány byly vždy dvě převrácené a dvě nepřevrácené fotografie, pořadí se měnilo pro vyrovnání počtu odpovědí pro každou fotografii. Výsledky ukázaly, že participanti uváděli větší množství odpovědí na zrcadlově otočené fotografie než na neobrácené fotografie, a to jak celkově, tak v počtu vlastností i v počtu protichůdných odpovědí od různých participantů (např. agresivní vs. neagresivní). Lišily se i kategorie vlastností odhadovaných u zrcadlově obrácených oproti neobráceným fotografiím. Následně modelky z posuzovaných fotografií vyplnily online dotazník, kde hodnotily adekvátnost přisouzených osobnostních vlastností, ale větší přesnost odhadu vlastností v důsledku zrcadlového otočení jsme nebyli schopni potvrdit kvůli malému souboru a výzkumnému schématu, které bylo zaměřené spíše na exploraci než konfirmaci. Práce slouží hlavně jako inspirace vědcům pro další výzkum v zatím málo prozkoumané oblasti psychologie.

Abstract:

This work is exploring the relationship between mirrors and personality characteristics in terms of the judgement of personality traits and utilisation of mirrors. It contains a qualitative study conducted with 31 participants (64,5 % women, average age 22,8 years) who were judging eight photographs of the woman faces, out of which four were regular photographs, and other four were their mirror-reversed counterparts. Participants were describing during personal interview what personality characteristics could the woman in the picture have, and their answers were compared between the groups of mirror-reversed photographs and non-reversed photographs. Only two reversed and two non-reversed photographs were presented during the session, and their order was randomised to balance the number of responses for each photograph. Results have shown that participants were mentioning more answers to mirror-reversed photographs than to non-reversed one in general, but also in the number of characteristics and contradictory responses (e.g. aggressive vs non-aggressive. There were also differences between mentioned categories of personality characteristics between mirror-reversed photographs and non-reversed ones. In addition, a questionnaire was sent to the models from judged pictures, where they were deciding the accuracy of judgements made on them. However, we could not prove better accuracy of the judgements for either condition because of the small sample and research design that was focused on exploration rather than confirmation. Work should serve mainly as an inspiration for the scientists for further research in this insufficiently explored field of psychology.
