Štefan Németh-Šamorínsky: Life and Work of Art

Abstract:

Slovensko začiatkom 20. storočia zažívalo isté profesionálne hudobné narodenie. Vyrastajú prví nádejní skladatelia a interpreti. Centrom slovenskej kultúry sa stáva ešte stále málo známa Bratislava. Ich úloha bola Ťažká, začínali akoby z ničoho z malou podporou niekolkých vzdelaných učitelov. Napriek týmto okolnostiam dali smerovanie vlastnej slovenskej národnej tvorbe a hudobnému štýlu. Jednou z významných osobností, ktorú v tejto práci budem spomínať a na jej dielo sa zameriam je Štefan Németh Šamorínsky. Stal sa žiakom Alexandra Albrechta, ktorý objavil vrodený mimoriadny talent. Béla Bartok, budapeštiansky hudobný majster a skladatel pomohol mladému nádejnému Némethovi ako v oblasti hry na organ tak po stránke kompozičnej. Jeho hudobný rast a dielo sa spája s mestom Bratislava, kde bol ako organista v dóme sv. Martina a neskor ako šéf dirigent zboru. Jeho cit pre hudbu je neopakovatelný, zakladá nový zbor a orchester a skladá skladby až do vrcholného diela Bratislavskej omše. V tejto práci je zachytený jeho hudobno-osobnostný rast s vystihnutou spoločenskou atmosférou mesta Bratislavy. Dúfam, že aj touto prácou sa stane osobnosť ešte málo známeho Štefana Németha čitatelom bližšia a jeho príklad bude impulzom hudobnej obnovy na Slovensku.

Abstract:

The Slovakia of the early 20th century was experiencing something like a musical rebirth with a new promising generation of composers and interpreters. Bratislava, by then not so quite well-known as of today, became a centre of the Slovakian culture. The role of the new musicians was difficult as they started virtually out of nothing with a support of just a few well-educated teachers. One of the personages I will cover in my thesis, focusing on his work, is Štefan Németh Šamorínsky. He was the student of Alexander Albert, who discovered in him en extraordinary natural talent. Béla Bartok, a Budapest music master and composer helped young promising Németh with both organ play and composition. Németh´s musical growth and works are connected with Bratislava, where he worked as an organist and chorus-master in the St. Martin´s Cathedral. hismusical sense is incredible. He establishes new chorus and orchestra and he goes on composing, his works culminating with his masterpiece - Bratislava Mass. This composition captures his musical and personal growth, as well as Bratislava social environment. I hope that my thesis will make the public more familiar with the so far not so well-known Stefan Németh and his example will serve as an impulse for Slovakian musical renaissance.
