History told through names. Development of first names in Norway as a result of language contact.

Abstract:

My bachelor paper deals with first names in Norway and their development from the earliest evidence up to the presence. I tried to characterize names in particular historical contexts of their origin, of their acceptance in Norway from other languages and cultures, but also in their meaning itself (semantic). I understand names as a result of language contacts which Norwegian had in its history – contacts with related languages (German, English), but also completely different languages ​​(Greek, Hebrew) which came to Norway as a part of Christian culture. These originally foreign names were adapted to Norwegian language and developed together with the local, old Nordic names. I suppose that the very meaning of names tells us about the culture of their origin, this is reflected in the title of the paper – Navn forteller historie – names narrate history.

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci se věnuji vývoji křestních jmen (fornavn) v Norsku od nejstarších dokladů až po současnost. Jména se snažím charakterizovat především v historických souvislostech, době jejich vzniku, přijetí z jiných jazyků a kultur a jejich významu. Jména vnímám jako doklad jazykového kontaktu, který norština měla ve své historii - s jazyky spřízněnými (němčina, angličtina), ale také jazyky zcela odlišnými (řečtina, hebrejština), které se do Norska dostávají jako součást křesťanské kultury. Původně cizí jména jsou v Norsku ponorštěna a vyvíjí se vedle domácích, staroseverských jmen. Vycházím z toho, že samotné významy jmen vypovídají o kultuře doby svého vzniku (odtud název práce Navn forteller historie – jména vypráví historii).
