Implicit and Explicit Attitudes as Dynamic Variables Forming Religious Representations

Abstract:

Způsob formování, stabilizace, přenosu a šíření náboženských konceptů v populaci je jedním z ústředních témat badatelské diskuze kognitivní vědy o náboženství. Dosavadní výzkum obohatil poznání zvláště v oblasti mapování univerzálních rysů náboženské kognice a způsobem svého zacílení se zatím vyhýbal otázkám spojeným s dynamickou a distribuovanou povahou náboženských systémů. Tato práce, se svým zaměřením na implicitní a explicitní postoje, stojí na straně nového trendu, který se vymezuje proti orientaci standardních vedoucích teorií kognitivní vědy o náboženství, a který programově buduje tzv. kontextuálně ukotvený přístup založený na inspiraci z behaviorální ekologie. Teoretická část práce přibližuje vybrané milníky diskuze o této problematice, pozornost je věnována vysvětlení procesu utváření přesvědčení a postojů, přiblížení povahy představ nadpřirozených činitelů a popsání dvou hlavních trendů kontextuálně zakotveného přístupu, směrem ke kultuře a směrem ke kognitivní ekologii. Empirická část práce představuje vlastní experimentální výzkum na implicitní a explicitní postoj důvěry vůči konceptům matky a panny, který může sloužit jako ilustrace způsobu implementace této, zatím spíše opomíjené, dynamické proměnné, do kognitivně orientovaného výzkumu náboženských představ.

Abstract:

Leading cognitive theories of religion focus mostly on the forming, stabilisation, transmission and spreading of religious concepts through the population. Their research strategies have produced rich body of novel insights into the universal features of religious cognition, however, by virtue of their focus; they do not address the dynamic and distributed nature of religious systems. Present work aiming on implicit and explicit attitudes follows the new trend moving away from the focus of standard leading theories - so called context based approach which builds on behavioural ecology. In the theoretical part of the thesis the discussion concerning these issues is presented, with focus on explaining the process of forming beliefs and attitudes, the nature of mental representations of supernatural agents and introduction of two main trends of context based approach - towards culture and towards cognitive ecology. Empirical part of the thesis presents original experimental research on implicit and explicit attitude of trust towards concepts of mother and virgin and can serve as an illustration of the way of implementation of this new dynamic variable into the cognitive research of religious representations.
