The impacts of Make in India program on foreign direct investments in the Indian manufacturing

Abstract:

Dne 25. září 2014 byl indickým premiérem Naréndrou Módím uveden program Make in India neboli „vyráběj v Indii“. V rámci programu by se Indie měla stát světovým centrem zpracovatelského průmyslu. Z tohoto důvodu bylo specifikováno 25 cílových sektorů, do kterých se měly výrazně liberalizovat podmínky pro uskutečnění přímých zahraničních investic (PZI). Hlavním cílem této práce je zjistit, zda program Make in India ovlivnil přímé zahraniční investory, aby mezi lety 2014-2019 uskutečňovali více investic ve zpracovatelském průmyslu v Indii. Vedlejším cílem této práce je vymezit, jakým způsobem program Make in India zjednodušuje investování a podnikání ve zpracovatelském průmyslu z obecného hlediska. Pro splnění cílů byl uskutečněn sekundární kvantitativní výzkum dat, poskytovaných mezinárodními a indickými národními institucemi a dále primární kvalitativní výzkum, který proběhl na základě polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s respondenty ze čtyř českých společností, které operují na indickém trhu. Práce došla k závěru, že samotný program Make in India zatím nijak významně zahraniční investory k uskutečnění PZI v Indii nepodnítil. Zároveň na indickém trhu stále dominuje problematika korupce a klientelismu, která může přímé zahraniční investory odrazovat. Daňová reforma GST a program Digital India, které na program nepřímo navazují, přispěly ke zlepšení podmínek fungování na indickém trhu.

Abstract:

The program Make in India was launched by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the 25th of September 2014. According to the program, India should become the world's manufacturing hub. For this reason, 25 target sectors have been specified, in which the conditions for carrying out foreign direct investment (FDI) should have been gradually liberalized. The main objective of the thesis is to find whether the Make in India program influenced foreign direct investors to carry out more investments in the manufacturing industry in India between the years 2014 and 2019. The secondary objective of the thesis is to define how the Make in India program simplifies carrying out investment and doing business in the Indian manufacturing sector in general. To meet the objectives, a secondary quantitative survey of data provided by international and Indian national institutions was conducted, as well as a primary qualitative survey, which was conducted on the basis of semi-structured interviews with respondents from four Czech companies operating in the Indian market. The findings of the thesis are that the Make in India program itself has not yet significantly encouraged foreign investors to carry out FDI in India. At the same time, the Indian market is still dominated by the issue of corruption and clientelism, which may discourage foreign direct investors. The Goods and Services Tax reform and Digital India program, which are indirectly connected to the Make in India program, have contributed to improving of operating conditions in the Indian market.
