English Theatre and Drama on the Continent in Early Modern Period: The Strolling Players

Abstract:

V předkládané disertační práci se věnuji tématu anglických cestujících hereckých společností v raném novověku v kontinentální Evropě. Sleduji postupně jednotlivé společnosti, jejich stálá angažmá i výpravy do evropských měst (území, na němž se společnosti pohybovaly, zahrnuje Francii, Španělské Nizozemí, severské země, německojazyčnou oblast a východní části Evropy). Po této faktografické části následují analytické kapitoly věnované provozu a inscenační praxi (finanční otázky, jevištní specifika ad.), samostatnou kapitolu tvoří komická postava. V poslední části práce se zabývám dramatickými texty spjatými s anglickými společnostmi. V závěru nabízím možné oblasti dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on English strolling players in early modern era on the continent. I introduce the groups of actors, their patrons and towns they were heading to (the area covered includes France, Low Countries, Spanish Netherlands, German-speaking region, Czech lands, and part of eastern Europe). This historical part is followed by analytical chapters including stage practise, financial matters etc.; a separate chapter speaks about comic figures such as Pickelhering. The last part focuses on the dramatic texts linked to the English actors.
