A history of information science in the USA in the first half of the twentieth century

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce „Historie informační vědy v USA v první polovině 20. století“ pojednává o vývoji od 17. století do roku 1950. Práce má jen jednu hlavní část, která je rozdělena do několika sekcí. Úvodní část se krátce zabývá samotným oborem informační věda a technologie, poté se věnuje jeho hlubší historii v období 17. – 19. století. Zde se zabývá nejenom osobnostmi a jejich vynálezy na začátku rozvoje této vědy, ale věnuje se i základům jiných věd. Poté již práce obrací pozornost k hlavní problematice, a to k létům 1900 – 1950, kde uvádí významné osobnosti a jejich vynálezy, které přispěly k rozvoji informační vědy. Tyto vynálezy vydláždily cestu k dnešním moderním počítačům a informačním technologiím, které nám usnadňují život. Poslední část se kromě vynálezů a vynálezců se také zmiňuje o několika specifických společnostech, které se zabývají informačními technologiemi a významně se podílely na jejich vývoji. Hlavním cílem této práce je přinést ucelený vývoj informační vědy do roku 1950 ve Spojených státech amerických.

Abstract:

Thesis for Bachelor Graduation „A history of information science in the USA in the first half of the twentieth century“ examines the development from the 17th century to the 1950’s. The thesis has one main section which is subdivided into several smaller parts. The initial part deals briefly with the branch of information science and technology, then presents a more detailed history during the 17th to the 19th century. Here it deals with not only the personalities and their inventions at the beginning of their development, but also the background of other sciences. The main part of the thesis pays specific attention to the problematic inventions of the first half of the 20th century, referring specifically to the inventors and their creations which contributed to the development of information science. These scientists helped to pave the way for today’s modern computers and information technology systems which make our lives easier. The last section of the text covers several specific companies who deal with information technologies and significantly participated in their development. The main aim of this work is to develop a view of information science up to the year 1950, in the United States of America.
