Geisha and Harakiri. Japanese Theatre Artists in the Czech Lands in the Second Half of the 19th Century and the First Decades of the 20th Century

Abstract:

Dizertace zkoumá působení prvních japonských divadelních umělců na území dnešní České republiky a jejich diváckou recepci. Divadlo je v práci uchopováno v celé jeho šíři, tedy včetně okrajových žánrů, jako jsou cirkus nebo nejrůznější varietní představení. Na základě rešerše dobového tisku jsou předložena zjištění o tom, jaké japonské divadelní skupiny vystoupily na našem území do poloviny 20. století a podána charakteristika jejich protagonistů v rámci japonské divadelní historie. Česká dobová recepce je nastíněna v co nejširším kontextu – je analyzována na pozadí stereotypních náhledů na Orient, dobového vnímání Japonska, a zároveň postupně se konstitujícího obrazu japonského divadla.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the appearances of the first Japanese theatre artists within the territory of today’s Czech Republic up to the mid 20th century, as well as the reception they received. In this study the theatre is conceived in its full breadth, thus including peripheral genres such as circus or all kinds of variety shows. Based on historical source research the thesis presents findings about all Japanese theatre companies that appeared in the Czech territory, and an explanation is given of who their protagonists were within the framework of Japanese theatre history. The reception is outlined within the broadest possible context – it is analysed above all upon the background of stereotypical views of the Orient, the prevailing perception of Japan during that period, and at the same time the constitution of the image of Japanese theatre.
