Desing of a bathroom sink with regard to design and function

Abstract:

Umyvadlo jsem vytvořila v bílé keramické verzi a industriální betonové verzi. Při pohledu na umyvadlo nenechá nikoho na pochybách můj umělecký záměr o jednoduchost, originalitu a minimalismus. Hodí se jak do domácností, tak do veřejných prostor. Je jasné, že umyvadlo se stane ústředním prvkem všech koupelen, kde bude nainstalováno. Umyvadlo je velmi funkční a praktické, díky častým konzultacím s odborníky má vyřešené veškeré technické detaily, které by mohly komplikovat používání umyvadla. Umyvadlo je na druhé straně také velmi originální a minimalistické, právě čistotu podtrhuje keramický materiál a industriální vzhled zase materiál betonový. Umyvadlo splňuje veškeré normy hygieny díky povrchové úpravě glazury keramiky a penetrace betonu. Odtokový žlábek umyvadla je zakrytý speciálním duralovým plíškem, který zachycuje veškeré větší nečistoty. Samozřejmostí je také doplnění umyvadla o baterii instalovanou ze zdi a napojení na standardní sifon o průměru 50 mm. Kotvit umyvadlo je možné hned několika způsoby. První z variant je klasická možnost instalace na desku. Deska může z jakéhokoli materiálu vhodného pro koupelny může být dřevěná, betonová či skleněná. Do desky je nutné vyříznout otvor pro odtok a napojení na sifon. Druhou variantou je postavení umyvadla na koupelnovou skříňku. Toto řešení je zejména praktické pro domácnosti. Elegantně je také skrytý odtok pod umyvadlem. Třetí variantou je instalace na kotvy, které jsou dostatečně pevné, aby unesly váhu umyvadla. Kotvy se standartně přimontují na zeď pomocí vrutů či závitových tyčí. Umyvadlo je možné připevnit mechanicky vruty do umyvadla nebo postačí přilepení tmelem za spodní stranu umyvadla. Čtvrtou variantou, kterou jsem zvolila pro prezentaci reálných umyvadel, je postavení umyvadla na samostatné nohy, které tak tvoří podpůrnou i estetickou funkci. Navrhla a vyrobila jsem dřevěné nohy inspirované přírodou. Akátové nohy v kombinaci s betonovým či keramickým materiálem umyvadla kontrastně propojují organický a minimalistický design.

Abstract:

The topic of my bachelor thesis was the design of the bathroom sink. It is slightly unusual topic for a student of Industrial design. Nevertheless, I always prefer to experiment with materials and I decided to create the perfect sink. Referring to the topic I designed the unique bathroom sink with regard to design and function. My inspiration for my bachelor thesis I found especially in purity, minimalism and nature. I believe that simplicity equals the ultimate sophistication. I started the process of designing with thorough research of modern types of sinks, developmental sketches and 3D modeling in Rhinoceros. Based on my research and the questionnaire for public I found out the contemporary style of bathroom sinks for common users. My thesis perfectly describes in detail the whole process of making the real sink from initial research of existing sinks, through the technical solution 3D software to the manufacturing of the real prototypes. For a manufacturing real sinks I chose ceramic and concrete material. The ceramic material I chose due to its long tradition and representative look. Furthermore, I would like to show the concrete material in a new light as an aesthetic and highly practical material. I decided for cooperation with traditional and prestigious company Laufen and with young dynamic company Gravelli. I would tell, it was the best decision I could ever made and the whole process was an amazing daily adventure. I appreciate the great opportunity of cooperation with these companies and I really enjoyed it. Regarding to the technical parameters I described in detail the technical processes of production. For example with the special concrete FixCrete is possible to create really thin products. Furthermore, the sinks are therefore treated with several layers of impregnation, which guarantees surface resistance against liquids and chemicals and also retain its natural appearance of concrete. I am satisfied with the result of my work and it also brought me a lot of new, practical and theoretical knowledge. I found out what I as a designer when designing afford, as established manufacturing practices and how the standards are strict.It required a lot of effort, responsibility and sacrifice, but I designed my greatest product and I am really proud of it. My aim has been approached to design the final outcome conveys the notion of minimalism. I loved to combine in order aesthetic and functional value in such a great materials like concrete and ceramic are. I wanted to achieve purity and simplicity of shape, especially with regard to future usage. And I believe I really succeed in design of my sink with the motto "Less is more".
