Compositional or Contextual Effects? Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis of the Czech Electoral Competition of 2013

Abstract:

Primárním cílem této diplomové práce je analýza volebního chování českého elektorátu z pohledu volební geografie. Autorka představuje a testuje syntetický pohled na dvě hlavní teoretické perspektivy volebně-geografického výzkumu – kompozitní a kontextuální přístup. Prostřednictvím nástrojů explorační prostorové analýzy dat, k nimž patří globální a lokální metody prostorové autokorelace a geograficky vážená regrese sloužící k detekci prostorové nestacionarity, je zkoumána volební podpora relevantních politických stran ve volbách do Poslanecké sněmovny Parlamentu ČR v roce 2013. Analytická část práce se snaží zodpovědět klíčové otázky spojené s existencí prostorových vzorců české volební soutěže, jejich shlukováním v prostoru a podmíněností.

Abstract:

The primary objective of the thesis is an analysis of voting behaviour of the Czech electorate. Focusing on the discipline of electoral geography, the author offers a new insight into the study of regional patterns of party support by synthesizing two seemingly opposing strands of research, i.e. compositional and contextual approach. Using exploratory spatial data analysis and its methods including global and local statistic of spatial autocorrelation and geographically weighted regression to detect spatial nonstationarity, the geography of voting in the Czech parliamentary election of 2013 is examined. The analytical part addresses the key questions of how the relevant political parties’ electoral support is distributed and spatially clustered and, last but not least, what factors play the major role in shaping the voter’s decision.
