Prevalence of Allergies in Dogs and Options for Their Management and Treatment

Abstract:

Alergická onemocnění psů představují častý zdravotní problém s rozlišnou etiologií a širokou škálou možných terapeutických přístupů. Přestože prevalence alergií v psí populaci není dosud dostatečně kvantifikována, předpokládá se, že podobně jako u lidí v posledních letech roste. K nárůstu diagnostikovaných případů přispívá nejen zvýšená informovanost veřejnosti, ale i lepší dostupnost moderních diagnostických metod. Skutečný výskyt alergií však zůstává obtížně vyčíslitelný, neboť hlášené případy a klinické diagnózy nemusí plně reflektovat skutečný rozsah problému. Klíčovým předpokladem pro zlepšení kvality života postižených jedinců je identifikace hlavních příčin onemocnění a vývoj efektivních strategií jejich zvládání. Etiologie alergií je multifaktoriální, přičemž zahrnuje genetické predispozice, environmentální vlivy a dysregulaci imunitního systému. Významnou roli v rozvoji alergických reakcí hraje rovněž expozice environmentálním alergenům, jako jsou pyly, roztoči či potravní složky. Terapie alergií vyžaduje komplexní přístup, zahrnující identifikaci a eliminaci spouštěčů, farmakologickou kontrolu symptomů a v některých případech také imunoterapii. Dietní intervence, zejména eliminační diety, se osvědčily především u potravinově podmíněných alergií. Farmakologická léčba, využívající antihistaminika, kortikosteroidy či inhibitory kalcineurinu, může významně zmírnit klinické příznaky, nicméně je často provázena rizikem nežádoucích účinků a obvykle neřeší samotnou příčinu onemocnění. V posledních letech vedl pokrok ve výzkumu k hlubšímu pochopení patofyziologických mechanismů alergických reakcí u psů, což umožnilo vývoj cílenějších terapeutických strategií, jako je například alergen-specifická imunoterapie nebo terapie monoklonálními protilátkami. Alergen-specifická imunoterapie (podávaná subkutánně či sublingválně) je založena na postupné expozici známým alergenům s cílem desenzibilizace imunitní odpovědi a vykazuje nadějné výsledky zejména při léčbě atopické dermatitidy. Navzdory těmto pokrokům v oblasti diagnostiky a terapie přetrvávají četné výzkumné výzvy. Molekulární charakterizace alergenů zodpovědných za potravinové alergie I. typu u zvířat je stále neúplná a chybí rovněž spolehlivé prediktivní biomarkery umožňující včasnou identifikaci rizikových jedinců. Dále je třeba zaměřit se na dlouhodobé hodnocení účinnosti a bezpečnosti dostupných léčebných přístupů a na podrobnější zkoumání vlivu prostředí a střevního mikrobiomu na vznik a průběh alergických onemocnění.

Abstract:

Allergic diseases in dogs represent a common health issue with diverse etiology and a wide range of potential therapeutic approaches. Although the prevalence of allergies in the canine population has not yet been sufficiently quantified, it is assumed that, similarly to humans, it has been increasing in recent years. The rise in diagnosed cases is attributed not only to greater public awareness but also to improved access to modern diagnostic methods. However, the true incidence of allergies remains difficult to determine, as reported cases and clinical diagnoses may not fully reflect the actual extent of the problem. A key prerequisite for improving the quality of life of affected individuals is the identification of the main causes of the disease and the development of effective management strategies. The etiology of allergies is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and immune system dysregulation. Exposure to environmental allergens such as pollen, mites, or food components also plays a significant role in the development of allergic reactions. The treatment of allergies requires a comprehensive approach, including the identification and elimination of triggers, pharmacological symptom control, and, in some cases, immunotherapy. Dietary interventions, particularly elimination diets, have proven effective mainly in food-induced allergies. Pharmacological therapy, including the use of antihistamines, corticosteroids, or calcineurin inhibitors, can significantly alleviate clinical symptoms, but it is often associated with the risk of side effects and usually does not address the underlying cause of the disease. In recent years, advances in research have led to a deeper understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of allergic reactions in dogs, enabling the development of more targeted therapeutic strategies, such as allergen-specific immunotherapy or monoclonal antibody treatments. Allergen-specific immunotherapy (administered subcutaneously or sublingually) is based on the gradual exposure of the patient to known allergens with the aim of desensitizing the immune response and has shown promising results, particularly in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Despite these advances in diagnostics and therapy, numerous research challenges remain. The molecular characterization of allergens responsible for type I food allergies in animals is still incomplete, and reliable predictive biomarkers for early identification of at-risk individuals are lacking. Furthermore, it is necessary to focus on long-term evaluation of the efficacy and safety of available treatment methods, as well as on further investigation of the role of environmental factors and the gut microbiome in the development and course of allergic diseases.
