Risk perceptions of COVID-19

Abstract:

Úvod: Po vypuknutí koronavirové pandemie byla v mnoha zemích zavedena přísná preventivní opatření. Jedním z faktorů pro dosažení změny chování a akceptování nařízení je percepce zdravotního rizika obyvatel. Metodika: Data byla získána z celorepublikového dotazníkového šetření výzkumníků z Ústavu epidemiologie a ochrany veřejného zdraví, Lékařské fakulty, Ostravské univerzity, které probíhalo od 1. do 26. dubna 2020. V této bakalářské práci jsou vyhodnoceny subjektivní názory respondentů na závažnost situace COVID-19, předpokládanou dobu návratu do normálních kolejí a možnost cestování v rámci Evropy i celého světa. Proměnné byly zpracovány s ohledem k věku, pohlaví a vzdělání respondentů. Pro vyhodnocení rozdílů byl použit Paersonův ?2 test na hladině významnosti 5 %. Statistické analýzy byly zpracovány v programu SW STATA verze 15. Výsledky: Průzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 9 168 respondentů, z toho přibližně 76,8 % žen a 23,2 % mužů v průměrném věku 40 let. Z výsledků vyplývá, že dle respondentů byla v průběhu šetření nejzávažnější situace v Americe. Ženy odhadovaly potřebnou dobu pro návrat života v ČR do normálních kolejí kratší než muži. Naopak v otázce na dobu, po jejímž uplynutí bude možné cestovat, byly ženy skeptičtější. Optimističtější pohled na všechny otázky měly mladší věkové kategorie a osoby s vyšším dosaženým vzděláním. Rozdíly mezi odhadovanou dobou u všech otázek a pohlavím, věkem i úrovní vzdělání byly statisticky významné (p<0,001). Závěr: Vnímání zdravotního rizika COVID-19 je ovlivněno strachem, důvěrou, komunikací a také sociodemografickými faktory jako je věk, pohlaví a vzdělání jedince.

Abstract:

Introduction: Following the outbreak of a coronavirus pandemic, strict preventive measures have been adjusted in many countries. One of the factors for achieving a change in behavior and acceptance of the regulation is the risk perception of the population. Methods: Data were obtained from a nationwide questionnaire survey of researchers from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ostrava, which was conducted from 1 to 26 April 2020. This bachelor's thesis evaluates the subjective views of respondents on the severity of the situation, the expected time of return to normal life and the possibility of traveling in Europe and around the world. The variables were tested with respect to the age, gender and education of the respondents. Paerson's ?2 test at a significance level of 5 % was used to evaluate the differences. Statistical analyzes were processed in the SW STATA program version 15. Results: A total of 9,168 respondents took part in the survey, of which approximately 76.8 % were women and 23.2 % were men with an average age of 40 years. The results showed that, according to the respondents, the situation in America was the most serious during the survey. Women estimated the time needed to return life in the Czech Republic to normal state to be shorter than men. On the contrary, women were more sceptical about the time after which it would be possible to travel. Younger age groups and people with higher education had a more optimistic view of all issues. The differences between the estimated time for all questions and gender, age and level of education were statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: The perception of the health risk of COVID-19 is influenced by fear, trust, communication and also socio-demographic factors such as age, gender and education of the individual.
