Gothic and Renaissance Tiles from Silesian Castles

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou kachlů z hradů českého Slezska v období středověku a raného novověku. Na základě analýzy tohoto specifického hmotného pramene, dokládajícího vytápění hradních interiérů kachlovými kamny, jsou v komparaci se srovnatelnými nálezy ze střední Evropy postiženy základní technologické a ikonografické aspekty, zohledněné historickými okolnostmi a stavebním vývojem relevantních sídel. Představený přehled, doplněný katalogem nálezů a obrazovými přílohami, poskytuje přehled o kachlových výrobcích, které se uplatnily ve vyšším sociálním prostředí, kde kamna neměla pouze funkci vyhřívací a estetickou, nýbrž také manifestační. Poznání úrovně kachlové produkce, získané ze slezských hradů, se dotýká otázek historického vývoje tohoto pomezního regionu a jeho vazeb se sousedními oblastmi.

Abstract:

The article discusses tiles from castles in the region of Bohemian Silesia in the Middle Ages and the early modern age. Basic technological and iconographic aspects of tiles, compared with analogical finds from central Europe, are placed in the historical context and related to the building development of castles on the basis of the analysis of this specific material source, confirming the heating of castle interiors with tile stoves. The article, accompanied by a catalogue of finds and pictorial supplements, gives an overview of tile products employed among the higher social strata where stoves did not have only a heating and aesthetic function but also served as a status symbol. Information about tile production acquired from Silesian castles reflects the historical development of this border area and its connections with the neighbouring regions.
